Please help me, I'm trying to fix a friends computer that has smitfraud. I've done everything in the HighJack sticky, and ran most of the recommended programs from the other posts, like hoster, reglite, cleanup, deldomains, and killbox. Ad-Aware will not run for some reason. Here is the HighJack log, any help would be appreciated.

Start, Run, regedit, OK to bring up the regedit program.

find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)

Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK. Close the program and reboot.

Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My Active Desktop as a web page. OK

Above should take care of the worst of the termite damage left by smit. You have something else tho.

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it then and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.iup.edu/h...net/winfix.shtm

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:

O16 - DPF: {DCF0768D-BA7A-101A-B57A-0000C0C3ED5F} - file://C:\x.cab

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post it. Let's
see how we did.

I don't see anything in the log except that your aol antispyware program has been eaten. You might want to reinstall it.

Not really up on adaware. I presume the bug made some changes to the registry but have no idea what they are.

Have you tried the real Microsoft AntiSpy Beta? If you have a valid copy of XP, it's a pretty good program.

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

If you really want to check for adware, spyware and viruses get mwav.exe. It will take hours to scan your system but it finds almost everything.

http://www.spywarein...wnload/mwav.exe

(10 meg download - needs a fast link!)
