virus causing NTLDR to go missing

There was a program called windows optimizer 2008 run on this computer last week. It has caused it to boot up to an NTLDR is missing dialogue when it loses power, or shuts down on certain time spans. Sometimes when it shuts down it does not get the dialogue. I have managed to get the error twice.
I tried using the boot disk from ntldrismissing.com, but only got a hal.dll is missing error.

I have now reinstalled windows twice. If i try to immediately reinstall XP, i get past all of the preloader screens, but when it asks me to reset to continue installation, i get the NTLDR is missing screen again. I've found i can fix this by going into the windows recovery console and manually replacing NTLDR.

I have run Norton Antivirus, which has come up with nothing.

I was hoping you guys could help me with this :)

Further notes: I am currently borrowing my friend's copy of XP because I left mine at home and i am currently in university. For this reason i dont want to install Windows Genuine Advantage because i dont want to lose my computer in the case that his copy is fake.
