Can't change folder attributes in XP

I have a Tyan S2875 MB w/ dual amd 250's, 4GB ram, WD Raptor 74GB sata, Maxtor 320GB sata. I am the only user and most folders on both drives are READ ONLY and I can't change them. Help.
