Ok, I wan't to make a text based game, but I have to idea where to start. I don't really wan't it to be browser based, because I don't have a website. I wan't to be able to have sound and effects and such. What language/programs would I have to use? Is it even possable?

Games require the very advanced coding. If you are looking to get into it seriously then I would start with C++ or C#. You will find loads of good information and books on the subject at this site: http://www.gamedev.net/

I agree with Titan8990, the Gamedev site is definitely a good one. I would definatley suggest using c++ and your choice in programming languages for video games. I only say this because it is the industry standard right now for creating video games. It is possible to make games in just about any language, but if you want to get serious C++ is the answer for you. There are also many more resources for creating games in C++.

I use this: http://allegro.cc it is a game development library plugin for C++, gives you things like timers and graphic utilities for creating 2d graphics. also has some sound support.

There is a lot of information out there, I started with a book called "Beginning Game Programming"
Teaches you the basics of C++ in a game based context.

Good luck out there! and if you have any more specific questions, let me know!
