I went to someones house to see if I could fix their computer, well, I was able to and I installed an antivirus scanner, ran updates, etc, then I went ahead and started the Vista SP1 install on it. It appears to have hung up a certain file, I get (sits there and flashes) !! oxc0190036 !! , then, what I assume to be, the file number being updated 609/xxxxx (series of numbers go where xxx is) helppane.exe so this is whats on the screen>

!! oxc0190036 !! 609/xxxxxxx helppane.exe

(what i could remember/copy down, not exact, sorry) Is this from a bad update download or what? I'm currently doing a system restore and seeing if I can get the computer back to a bootable mode. I ran the windowsupdate and let it install and start the update, everything went fine up to this point. Should I download the complete SP1 update and try installing that instead of letting windowsupdate handle it?

That's definitely an odd error with SP1, I don't know a solution off the top of my head, but I know MS is offering free SP1 tech support for all versions of Vista, so it might be worth giving them a call and working it out. What is the hardware like on this computer?

I called, they didn't have anyone there to take the call... but it was during normal business hours that they listed... strange, but ok.

I glanced at it, it was a laptop, 1.6ghz AMD chip, not sure what exactly, about 2048 ram roughly, integrated graphics it also appeared. Like I said, just a glance. I'm hoping the system restore worked, I just left it running since it was taking awhile.

What sucks is I had the thing running perfectly until I tried installing SP1.

I'll find out more tomorrow.

I am having a very simiar problem.

I downloaded the full SP1 install and began upgrading my Sony AR series laptop- 4GB Ram, 300+ GB Hard Drive, Vista Ultimate

I let it do its thing and came back to a black dos screen displaying:

!! 0x0190036 !! 1996/72455 (gameux.dll)

It's kind of flashing, like the screen is redrawing it over and over again but always in the same place.

I rebooted the machine normally and it appears to go through dozens (maybe hundreds?) of OS files this way and then always gets stuck at the same point.

It told me Windowss Failed to Start and gave me the recommended option of "Launch Startup Repair" which I did (and removed all USB devices so nothing is connected that doesn't absolutely have to be)

I get the "Startup Repair is checking your system for problems..." window and it does its thing, reboots, and comes to the same problem.

I tried starting as Last Know Good Configuration - same problem.

I tried starting in Safe Mode- the computer just hangs after loading some file (which I didn't write down but isn't the same as above)

I did the restore point to just before I began the SP1 install and am back online... no idea why it happened or if it will again.

Well I tried again and had the same problem... with nothing left to lose (I thought) I decided to go to the command prompt and rename the problem file (gameux.dll) to gameux2.dll (in c:\windows\system32) and reboot...

The installation seemed to continue as normal- the black screen came and went, it went through all 73,000+ files and registry locations it had to, then rebooted again...

It then said a disk check was scheduled and chkdsk begain doing its thing...

Then I saw that it deleted gameux.dll and gameux2.dll from some sort of index...

Now the system rebooted on its own and is back to Stage 3 of 3 of installing SP1... we'll see what happens. I deffinitely am a little nervous the disk check decided to kill the renamed file, but I'm guesses it must have been some error with it to begin with- although chkdsk didn't pick it up earlier as a problem.

EDIT-
Well it worked, install completed and there was a new version of gameux.dll (dated with the rest of the SP1 files) so that must have been it.

Well don't worry, your pics aren't lost...

Instead of going to "Safe Mode" choose to restore your computer to an earlier time, there was a restore point automatically created right before the installation begins, you should be able to get back to exactly where you were before you attempted the install.

THEN back up your important files before trying again.

Thanks for reply, I have tried what you suggested but unfortuneately it didnt work, I think this is bcos I cant remember my Administrater pword and have to log in as a guest. When I try to restore I get a message saying system restore cannot restore your computer, due to being in a diagnostic state.
I have backed up all files to an external HD and am now considering re setting to factory settings. is this a good idea ? Ive checked the external HD and was surprised that my pics were not shown as thumbs after the back up, there are about 30 lines of text with a file extension that I dont recognise, this covers the entire back up which took just over 5 hrs, is this normal ?
Im a "silver surfer" and appreciate any & all help / ideas that you Guys can offer. Cheers.

Yes, not having the administrator password will be a problem- did you try just leaving it blank? I'm not sure if Vista requires you make a password, I know on XP lots of time it asks for a password even though there is none.

I'm not sure what would be in your backup, I never have used Vista to make one, but 5 hours would sound about right for a full HD backup... My *guess* is you can open that file after you reset everything and navigate to your my pictures (or wherever) folder and copy them back.

Restoring to the original state will delete everything so if the backup didn't copy the pictures they will be gone. I would just guess more at the admin password... did someone set it up for you? Maybe they know what they set?

Good luck with whatever you choose.
