Hello all, my name is Jim and i have some issues with my pc (obviously) :) So this infection is totally my fault I downloaded what I thought was a windows malicious software removal update and ended up being a trojan with lots of spyware and adware and such. I got all sorts of notices popping up from windows security center saying I had all kinds of problems like Trojandownloder.xs 007spy, windows/ntnut.exe threat owebsearch, windows/apphelp32.dll, windwos/autodisc32.dll, windows/telefonos.tst 123messenger and what not. I also got the yellow triangle on the bottom right toolbar with messages telling me my computer was infected with sypware and to run a full system scan and more messages that said my computer was running slowy because of spyware and another one similar to that. The thing that got me most was that my background changed to this seafoam green color with a yellow message in the middle saying "Warning: spyware has been detected on your pc. Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity. It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities. Antispyware helps protect your pc against spyware and other security threats. Click here to scan your computer for spyware. I wasn't sure what was going on and yes I did click the link, it took me to a top anitspyware website but the page would never load, I know, dumb move, but hey, I made a mistake so please don't be too harsh on me. The thing that bothers me the most is that I couldn't open my task manager, i got a message saying that the task manager has been disabled my my administrator, now this is my personal pc so I am the administrator as far as I know. LOL. So I have gone through the five steps with questions about the updating windows part because my computer came with servicepack2 so I wasn't too sure about that. I have ran all the scans and the yellow triangel pop ups have stopped and so have the windows security messages but I still cannot acess my task manager so I feel there are still some prolems I am posting my logs so please let me know if I have done anything incorrectly or forgotten anything and thank you so much for just listening to my problems. Hope you can help me. Jim

P.S. If any of you have skype my screen name is walkingfish5 it may just make it easier to talk to me because I may understand it better. Thanks again. JIM

Hi, h.a.d.fish :)

Lets take a deeper look:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Ok so I leapt before I looked and I ran the combofix first before disabling my antispyware and when it was finished my computer went screwey and I had to manually shut it down and restart it. I went back and read all the instructions thouroughly and shut down all my antivirus and firewalls and ran it again. fortunately it only gave me one log so I guess it wrote over the first one but here's my results and hopefully I didn't screw up too much. I just really hope you're as patient with me as can be cause sometimes I'm just thick, sorry. Anyway, here's the logs:

ComboFix log:

*********************************Just a side Note*************************************************************
I have Spybot Search and Destroy on my computer and after I ran the first combofix it really messed with my computer so I'm uninstalling it. Just wanted your opinion if this is a good idea or not cause it seems to interfere with things. I'll download and install it again if you think it's worth keeping. Thanks again and cheers! :) JIm

Once saved, referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe, and post back the resulting report along with a Hijackthis log..

Ok so I followed your directions and I believe I followed them correctly. The only thing I'm having difficulty with is that after I run the combo fix my computer doesn't do anything. It just shows my desktop background picture with no icons or taskbar or anything. I had to restart my computer to get it all back, this is the same thing that happened last time so I'm going to assume that this is normal unless you tell me otherwise. Enough babble, here's the logs. Oh and thanks by the way! Cheers! :) JIM

Hi, h.a.d.fish :)

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Remove the following folders:

C:\s2v0
C:\s4us.2C:\s8c
C:\s4us.2C:
C:\s4gg
C:\s3ac.1
C:\s32s

Your are using three Antivirus, Nod32, Norton and AVG7.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as: Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

I would suggest you remove Norton and Nod32 and keep AVG7.

The rest looks clear. How is the computer doing?

Ok just so we're clear, I restarted my computer in safe mode and went to the c: drive but i did not see any folders with the names you provided, I did see files that matched so I deleted those. I did see most but not all, and I was confused about two of them, I'll list it all below, thanks, Jim

Deleted:

c:\s2vo
c:\s4us.2
c:\s4gg
c:\s3ac.1
c:\s32s
c:\s8c

The two I was confused with were the ones you had labeled

c:\s4us2c:\s8c I assume these were just two that needed to be seperated so I'm not sure if you meant c:\s4us.1????? maybe? I didn't delete it but I will go back and do so if you want me to. and then you had one labled c:\s4us.2c, I didn't see one labled exactly like that so I assumed you just meant c:\s4us.2 so that's what I deleted. Ok so let me know if I messed anything up or what the next step is. My computer seems to be running ok, I have 4gig of memory so sometimes it's hard to tell, but it seems ok from what I can tell. Thanks again! JIm

**-----Just to let you know, I went back and read through all these posts and I see that you wrote those files the way they were meant so I didn't see the ones listed just above this. So I don't know what c:\s8c is for but I did delete it so I hope I don't need it or will miss it LOL, My bad! JIm

Hi, h.a.d.fish. :)

You did well, congratulations.Posted Image

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
Create a Restore point (If the above process fails):
  • Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  • In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • ZonedOut + IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Read and follow the suggestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet...prevention.html .
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Ok so I did what you asked but before I delete all of the programs, are there any more scans or reports you want me to run to make sure I'm all clear? I believe I'm good and I'll definately donate. I can't thank you enough for all of your time, patience and help, you've been great. What you have here at geeks to go is nothing less than remarkable. Keep up the good work and by all means pat yourself on the back, good work man!!! :) I'll heed all warnings and take the time to read through the forums, thanks again and I think while I'm here I'll make the most of your website. Many Many thanks,

JIM
