internet explorer keeps freezing and crashing

i am new to the web site and have a question.

I have windows xp operating system and internet explorer. i'm not sure if there is some virus or defect but internet explorer continues to freeze randomly. I have tried reinstalling internet explorer and upgrading to the new version but the problem continues. Any suggestions? Any and all help will be appreciated.

i have run ad-aware and anti-virus and nothing found.
