Hello. I believe my computer is infected with a bagle variant. It began two weeks ago when I tried to open a game I downloaded from emule. A window appeared asking me to choose a file to crack. I closed it, but then my mcafee advised that it was no longer working. The fix option was disabled. Mcafee system guard advised that registry changes had been made, adding wintems.exe and hldrrr.exe (I also found mdelk.exe on the system). When trying to run a scan, the computer blue screened. Microsoft virus alert identified the problems as winNI/bagle.gen virus. When attempting to run the Windows malicious software removal tool, it would stop when it reached programfiles/mcafee/mcods.exe. Process Explorer showed active wintems.exe and mdelk.exe and I could not shut them down. I can use the Internet but it is very slow and often hangs.

I did some research and attempted the following: online scans with ESET, Mcafee, Housecall. Each said the system had viruses that were cleaned, but they would reappear on reboot. I can run regedit and safe mode, so I removed several entries (firstRRRun, datetime 4) according to the Symantec instructions for bagle, but they reappear on reboot. I tried downloading and running a number of virus programs and anti-rootkit, but for most I get a message saying "not a valid win32 operation" when I try to run them. Those that run either don't detect anything or say they've deleted the virus (which they haven't).

The second day the virus started opening up the desktop.ini notepad file on start up (it appears this file was created initially but wasn't opening at first). wintems and mdelk are no longer showing as active processes, but mdelk.exe is still in system/win32 folder. I also tried running f-secure's bagle.exe cleaner, avast virus cleaner, mcafee sting, cleanbagle.exe, and elibaglia (spanish program). F-secure locks up, cleanbagle and elibaglia say they found virus and deleted, but it's still there. When I try to run these programs, I often get a blue screen shut down and Windows virus alert. I've tried re-installing AVG and f-secure from safe mode, but they won't run.

I tried to run superantispyware, but in normal mode it blue screened and shut down. I could get it to run in safe mode. I've attached the scan log below. At the end, all items except the "Trojan unclassified" were default checked so I selected to quarantene. However, on reboot, the desktop.ini notepad files ran again and nothing had changed.

When I rebooted the computer, the two desktop.ini files opened. I closed them and my screen went black. I opened task manager and saw that my CPU was running at 100%. This continued for about 15 minutes, at which point I control/alt/deleted to restart. I left the destop.ini files alone and the desktop came back.

I've done all the other prep you ask for in the forum, and the hijackthis log is also attached below. It ran in safe mode.

My computer is 8 months old, a Dell, running Vista. I keep everything updated and run regular virus checks. I'm at the point where I guess I have to take it somewhere and wipe everything, but I see that you've been able to help a number of people on this forum with a similar problem. I really hope someone here can lend me a hand, as I really don't want to have to lose all my data if I can possibly avoid it! Thanks in advance.

This time only these two were showing:
