hey guys, I just bought a used computer and it's really slow. I ran anti-malware stuff on it, but it didn't get much better. Here's my hijack this log...

Hi mccallum79,

Hello and welcome back to Geeks To Go! My name is BHowett and I will be helping you to get sorted.

Sorry for the delay, as you can tell we are very busy here.Got a few things for you… first I just want to say, I looked through your previous post and saw that you got help here twice before. Once you didn’t complete the instructions given by the helper, resulting in the helper closing your topic do to inactivity. And in the other the helper gave his final instruction and got no reply saying you completed it, or not even a thank you. Just be aware that if this happens again you will more then likely not be able to receive help here any longer.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s move on…………

First your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file, or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

  • Please go to Start > My Computer > C:\
  • right-click and select New > Folder then name the folder 'HJT'.
  • Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Your copy of HijackThis is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0ZW3GFWL\HiJackThis[1].exe

If you can’t find it, it might be easier to just reinstall it.

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

===============================================

I don’t really see much in your log as it is now, so next we need to some deeper scans.

Deckard's System Scanner

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

===============================================

Kaspersky WebScanner
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
===============================================

Needed in you next reply:

Deckard's System Scanner main.txt and extra.txt
Kaspersky results

Hey there and thanks for the quick response. About the last two times I got help...I thought I had finished all of their instructions and I was always very careful to be gracious for the help they offered...if I seemed ungrateful or didn't do what I was supposed to, I swear it was unintentional. I really am sorry.
Here are the reports you asked for...first, the new hijack this...

Hi mccallum79,

Well your logs are looking nice and clean :) …. Just one thing to fix with HijackThis.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {B64F4A7C-97C9-11DA-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A} - http://xscanner.spys...install1322.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

==================================================

Now I do see that you have a few optional and unnecessary programs, however it’s entirely up you if you need/use them or want to uninstall them.

Logitech and Viewpoint are known to take up a lot of space and resources

Logitech MouseWare 9.42 .1
Logitech User's Guide
Viewpoint Media Player

Now you said you just bought this computer used … there are programs taking up space and resources that I don’t believe you need or use from 2002 - 2005, etc… but again its up to you if you need/use them or want to uninstall them…. Just to name a few

PestPatrol
Quicken 2002 Deluxe
QuickLink III
TurboTax ItsDeductible 2005

==================================================

Because you only have less then 15% free space on your C: drive, and you bought this computer used, I would recommend you do the following:

go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs on there you don’t need or use.

Then download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Next defrag your hard drive to help you system run faster.

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment (C:\ drive), and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.

==================================================

After that let us know how your system is running, and if its still running to slow for you, we can send you over to the tech forum and see what they can do.

hey there! so, I did everything you suggested and I think the problem has reared its' ugly head. When I went to defrag the hard drive, it said that I only had 6% of my hard drive space available and that it needed at least fifteen percent to run effectively. After I defragged it, it said I only had 7% available and that I needed to delete some stuff. I uninstalled everything you said that I should, but I'm a little worried to erase more because I'm not really sure what is important and what isn't. Any way to tell? I really just use this computer for internet and word processing, so anything fancier than that I really don't need. Thanks again!

Hello again,

Well it’s pretty safe to take out most of what’s in the add & remove programs if you don’t use it…. Some things you would want to keep are things like any security updates, your latest Java update, Microsoft word etc.. It’s nearly imposable for me to know what you do or do not use. If you would like, we can get an uninstall list and I could tell you everything I would take out…however it would really be up to you to make the choice because you know what you use or don’t use.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Also keep in mind that files and folder take up space, just to name the most popular people typically save things to:

My Documents
My Pictures
My music
My Downloads

You might want to go through them and clean out what you don’t need… music and picture downloads take up a lot of space. If you have a lot on there that you want to keep, you might consider investing in an external hard drive to move everything to so you can free up the space on your C: Drive.

Just let me know what you want to do I will help the best I can…. Or maybe you can start a topic in the tech forum and see if they have and good ideas. :)

Hello!
Yep, I thought about the external hard drive thing and I think I will need to do that. My hard drive only has 10gb, so I think it will be a constant struggle to keep enough memory free. Here is the uninstall list, so we can take care of as much as possible, then maybe I can ask the tech forum guys about any other steps to take. Thank you so much for all of your help and patience, it is greatly appreciated.

Ok here is what I would remove from your uninstall list to make a little room… Now remember I have no Idea what you use or don’t use, so its entirely up to you if you want to uninstall the following programs.

go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if you choose to.

AnswerWorks Runtime
AnswerWorks® is a cross-lingual question-answering engine that allows companies to add an easy-to-use natural-language interface to Help systems and web-based knowledge repositories. Uninstall if you don’t use it.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Is a 30 day trial Antivirus program commonly used on forms like this one, you can uninstall it.

Brother HL-5050
The HL-5050 is an expandable personal printer. Uninstall if its not you printer.

DVDExpress
Is used to copy your DVD movie to DVD R/RW easily or shareware, so you can uninstall it if you don't use it.

EPSON Printer Software
Epson is a printer, so uninstall if it is not your printer.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
old java update you can delete it

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
Belongs to Norton programs -- Antivirus, Systemworks, Personal Firewall, 360, etc. LiveReg and Live Update are required for those programs. I don’t see you using any of those do you can uninstall it.

Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.13)
Is a web browser… I didn’t see this running in you HijackThis log so if you don’t use it you can uninstall it.

PestPatrol Upgrade
Pest Patrol by Computer Associates International is a spyware program. If you don’t use it or didn’t buy it, you can uninstall it

SafeCast Shared Components
This Add or Remove Programs entry corresponds to a program that is either malware, installs malware, or is bundled with malware. Uninstall this one.

Is a program commonly used on forms like this one, you can uninstall it.

TurboTax ItsDeductible 2005
Tax software from 2005 you can uninstall it.

WexTech AnswerWorks

hello! well, I uninstalled all of those programs, but my percentage of free harddrive space didnt go up at all. I think my only recourse is to transfer all of my pics onto an external hard drive. Do you think I should bother talking to someone in the tech forum, or would I just be wasting their time? Thank you so much for all of your help, I really appreciate it. Hi mccallum79,

Your welcome…. As far as asking the tech’s I would recommend waiting until you clear up the hard drive a bit. After that if it’s still running to slow for you, feel free to see if they have any tips or tricks to help you speed it up :) .

This is my standard post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise me of any questions or problems you still have.

I know you already have some of the programs like Antivirus, or 3rd party firewall, but I still like to share the information incase you ever need it, or want to change them.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Posted Image 1.) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

Posted Image 2.) Go to Intenet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL High-Priority Security Updates listed. If you're running Windows XP, that of course includes the Service Pack 2! If you suspect your computer is infected with Malware of any type, we advise you to not install SP2 if you don't already have it. You can post a HijackThis log on our Forums to get free Expert help cleaning your machine. Once you are sure you have a clean system, it is highly recommended to install SP2 to help prevent against future infections.

It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

Posted Image 3.) Open Intenet Explorer and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK. Now press "Custom Level." In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option > Security.

So why is ActiveX so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

Posted Image 4.) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster

It will protect you from most spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer) Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer. Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

Posted Image 5.) Let's also not forget that Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.

Posted Image 6.) Microsoft now offers their own free malicious software blocking tool. Windows Defender improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

Posted Image 7.) Another excellent program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard.
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

Posted Image 8.) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Another good hosts program is mvpshosts. This little program packs a powerful punch as it block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial.

*It is important to note that all of the above programs/files can be run simultaneously on your system. They will work together in layers, so to speak, to help protect your computer. However, the following suggestions are designed to only run one of each. It is not a good idea to run more than one firewall, and one anti-virus program. Running more than one of these at a time can cause system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other.*

Posted Image 9.) It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Three good ones that are freeware to boot are ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Sygate

Posted Image 10.) An Anti-Virus product is a necessity. There are many excellent programs that you can purchase. However, we choose to advocate the use of free programs whenever possible. Some very good and easy-to-use free A/V programs are AVG, Avast, and AntiVir. It's a good idea to set these to receive automatic updates so you are always as fully protected as possible from the newest virus threats.
NOTE: DO NOT install more than one anti-virus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for letting us help you!
