Hi there,

OK, I did all that and posted the log below. As in the past the thing is still there, this time it is called ecbtsti.exe and the other files came back. I fished around in various directories looking for clues and found a ton of files called sysxxxx.exe in the Windows directory, where xxxx is a 4 numbers. They start on 4/13 which is when I believe she caught the virus, and there are several per day. I ran one for fun to see what would happen but it did nothing noticeable, however it did start a process called wisvccz.exe. I can't run any antivirus software on her PC in normal mode but I found a place on Kaspersky Labs site where you can upload individual files and their server will scan them for you. I did it with that file as well as the ecbtsti.exe file and a couple of the sysxxxx.exe files. It reported them as follows:

wisvccz.exe - infected by Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Lager.c
ecbtsti.exe - infected by Backdoor.Win32.PPdoor.j
sys5021.exe - infected by Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Lager.b

I tried downloading Kaspersky's AV product but it wouldn't run either, maybe I'll try and get her to run it in safe-mode later. There are various registry entries that refer to wisvccz.exe but I left them alone and didn't delete anything as I didn't want to mess up anything you may want me to try. How would you suggest I proceed from here? Thanks again for all your time.

1.)Download CleanUp! - DON'T run it yet!

2.)Download Ewido Security Suite, install it, then be sure to update it but DON'T run it yet!

3.)Download RKFiles from here:
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

4.)Once in Safe Mode, please run RKFiles.bat. It may take a while. When it is finished a windows should appear with a log. Make sure that log is saved!

5.)Run Cleanup!

6.)Run Ewido - Save the results!

Restart your computer in normal mode, and please post:

Results of Ewido Scan
RKFiles.bat log (should be saved as C:\log.txt)

Then please download DLLCompare from here:
http://downloads.sub.../DllCompare.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Click "Run Locate.com" to scan for DLL files. When the scan is finished, click "Compare". Finally, when that is complete, click "Make a Log of What Was Found". Please post the entire contents of the logfile here for me.

So, in your next post I need 3 logs.

Hi Banana,

Sorry dor the long delay in getting back to you, it's been a hectic week or so. My contract ends this week so I've been looking for a new one. Know anyone who needs a Cisco WAN engineer? Everybody wants security clearance these days...
Anyway, I only had partial success with what you asked for, Ewido wouldn't install in normal or safe mode. I have pasted the other logs below but I don't know if they are of any value to you without the Ewido part. In the log immediately below you will see a reference to WI32exe.old, that is a file I renamed a while ago as it is infected also. Thanks for all your help!

I think that is the head honcho!

Please read these instructions carefully

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Save it to your desktop.
*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file path listed below (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wi32exe.old

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button.

After reboot, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Ok, I'll try to do that this evening. Wouldn't renaming the file make it inaccessible and unable to run though?

Since I don't know what the heck it is, I'm definitely not going to say yes! But that's the big guy - which is why he was picked up by RK files. :tazz:

Hey again,

Yes it was an exe extension before I renamed it. I'll take a look at the Sophos site too, thanks for the info.

I need you to follow my instructions from post #19 before anything else :tazz:

It looks as if the files have kept the same name from the last time!

After you kill that worm with Killbox I need you to go into

C:\WINDOWS\system32 to make sure it's gone. Let me know and post the HiJackThis log along with the log from ActiveScan!

Hey Banana,

Sorry it's been so long, I haven't much time for it lately as I am job-hunting. I did the killbox stuff as you specified in step 19 but I still can't run any scanners, even online ones. They all seem to stall on ActiveX and I have checked the IE security settings as suggested and I'm guessing the virus/trojan is causing that too.

The virus is still there with yet another name but the wi32 file is long gone. I uploaded it to the Kaspersky server and it said it was infected with a pp.backdoor trojan. I wonder why Norton won't get rid of it or even detect it in safe-mode? It's all updated and should know about it I would think. I think the trouble is that this thing really has to be taken care of in safe-mode and I can't remotely control her PC in that state, so I'm relying on her to follow instructions and she is not very PC savvy at all.

One interesting thing that did happen was that I had her do a Hijack log afer doing the killbox stuff and the virus didn't show up in the running processes section, I've posted it below. However when I connected to her PC and took a look it was back, so I'm not sure what that means.
