Help-error checking on external drive

Hey guys. I've been having some problems with a WD external hard-drive and decided to run the error-check. It's been stuck in Phase 1 with 5 of the bars lit for about 2 days now... The cancel option isn't available, and the process doesn't show up in my Task Manager.

Everything I've read so far has extolled the dangers of cutting this off. I really need the stuff on this drive, and of course I never backed it up.

Are there ANY recommendations about what i should do?
