i've been using office 97 for years. don't use it too much so not worried about all the bells on office 2007, but i needwanted outlook 2007 so upgraded.

word 2007 and excel 2007 are so slow i want to go back to using word 97 and excel 97.

i can open word 97 and excel 97 from a quick start icon and then open files from withing word 97 or excel 97. i have changed the program selector from 2007 to 97 for .xls and .doc type files.

but when i try to open a doc/xls file directly (ie from My Docs or as an email attachement) i get a "C:\documents and Settings\user\folder\file.xls isn't a valid Win32 application" error message.

can anyone solve this ?

thanks

Welcome to Geeks2Go!

What you are probably experiencing is a 'conflict' caused by having two versions of Office installed. Microsoft does not recommend this, but they have provided a page which explains how the conflict can be avoided if you really must have two versions installed:
http://support.micro....com/kb/290576/

Aside from the above, what you need to be aware of with two versions installed is that any documents created with Office 2007 may not display properly in the corresponding Office 97 application. This is because the newer version has features which the older version doesn't have. If you used any of those features to create the document, Office 97 won't understand them. For that reason alone I would seriously consider having only one version installed and stick to it, after first establishing that all your existing Office documents will open in the version of Office you decide to keep using.

thanks pip22, that looks like it'll sort me out.

ps not interested in office 2007's bells and whistles (apart from outlook 2007) and the load speeds drive me to distraction!
