Hi..

I recently bought a new Laptop and I want to transfer my files (mostly family vids and pics) from the old Desktop I'm using to this Latptop.

Both computers are running on Windows XP SP2 and i heard that other people use Home Network (workgroups/file and printer sharing) and that allows them to share a file from one computer to another.


So here's the setup:

Desktop - connected to the Router/Modem through a CAT5 cable (wired).
Laptop - connected to the Router/Modem wirelessly.

My Router/Modem is - ProLink H9300G


Can someone help me or guide me on how to make a Workgroup that'll allow me to transfer big files from my old desktop to this new laptop.

Ok, so you want to transfer the files to your laptop.
Lets get a bit more information on your network.
Follow the steps below on both your computer and laptop.
Also state which log belongs to which device.

• Go to Start -> Run.
• In the Box, type in "cmd".
• A black box will appear. Type in: "ipconfig /all".
• A lot of information will appear, Please right click the black window and hit mark.
• Select every line of text you recieved and copy it into your next reply.

Also, What sort of files are you going to share?
Have you already set up a wireless network?
If yes, then did you secure this network properly?

After I've gotten this information I will be giving you a step by step guide on how to share your files. (Made specifically for you)

Most of the files are vids and pics... and then my personal files... the adobe tutorials I use for my school... etc.

I've tried creating a Network using the Network wizard but I can't make it to work that's why I asked for help here.

Did you post this IPconfig at your Uni?
You'll have to do this while your at home because the IP address you recieve from your router is diffrent when you're at home

Ok I'm here at our house already and I did the ipconfig /all thingy again on my laptop (while connected thru wi-fi) and the same result came up.

Ok, here goes. Sorry it took me a while, had some Real Life issues to deal with

Step 1: Opening your shares on the Laptop.
First, we're going to open up the folders on your laptop to put the files in.

• Go on your laptop and browse to your C:\ Drive.
• Make a new folder and call it "Sharing".
• In the folder "Sharing" make 4 subfolders named exactly as the names in the codebox.
  

  Videos and Pictures
  Personal Files
  Adobe Tutorials
  Other

• Go back to your C:\ and Right Click the "Sharing" Folder and hit Properties.
• Go to the "Sharing" tab and hit the radio box saying: "Share this Folder".
• Name the share "Sharing", equal to the name of the folder. Click apply and close the windows.

Step 2: Connecting your Desktop to your Laptop.
Now we're going to connect your Desktop to your laptop so you can transfer the files over.

• Go on your Desktop and open your "My Computer".
• In the menu bar, click "Tools" then hit the option "Make New Network Connection".
• Leave the first box alone, You'll need the second box. Type: "\\192.168.1.101\Sharing"
• A Windows should open and you should see the 4 subfolders you created earlier.

Step 3: Transfering your files to your Laptop.
This step should explain itself, But here goes.

• On your Desktop open the folder you have your files in.
• Open the window you just created in Step 2, open the subfolder you want the files in.
• Select all the files you want to transfer by selecting them while holding down "CTRL".
• Click and hold down the Left Mouse button and drag your files to the subfolder you opened.

You just copied your files over the network to your Laptop. Congratulations

hi there i have the same problem but my laptop is in vista and pc is xp home edition, i was able to connect my laptop to pc thru vista but i cannot connect my pc to vista , could you help me please?

But i don't see that option there.

It may be called "Map Network Drive" Or something along those lines.
It's the first option from the menu "Tools"
(this is in an English OS)

I highly recomend just password protecting both comps and turning off simple file sharing (tools>folder options>view)(in vista it's in the control panel.) then go to your new computer and go to start, run, and type \\NAMEOFOTHERCOMPUTER\c$ exactly like that but of course switch nameofothercomputer with the name of the other computer found by right clicking my computer and selecting properties and navigating to the name tab. doing so will take you directly to a login page where you type the username and password to the computer you're trying to access. once you're logged in it will bring up the C drive of the other computer!! vuala. then you don't have to worry about moving files around and such.

however if you're going to do this it is less secure than the method above make absolutely sure that both computers are password protected and that your wireless is also secure (preferably something stronger than WEP) or you're asking for trouble.

I never recommend sharing the root of a drive. It's a bit like opening up the front door of your house for everyone who knows 'the magical word'. Of course this is still a viable way to do it, but a lot less secure.

i tried this:

\\username\c$

and it really did open the C drive of the other computer. woah.
how could i disable it? can other people do that? because i WASN'T asked for a username/password or something.

Yes you can disable this.
Right click your C:\ Drive.
Go to "Sharing"
Then turn off sharing for the C:\ drive.
