Hi,
I posted earlier but got no responses, so I'm trying again. Is this the way it's done? Sorry - I'm new.

Anyway, I've got the about:blank infection that others on the board have described. I read and tried the solutions suggested here, but I can't shake it. BTW, I'm running Windows 98 (I know - totally primitive).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Hijack This log to follow below.

Jeff

Hi Jeff and welcome to GeeksToGo.

You should not create a new topic for this. If no one replies to your post after a while (I would say give it 24 hours), then I suggest replying to your own post with a bump message so that you can move it up. But don't do this a lot, just after a day or so should do it.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\cokse.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\cokse.dll/sp.html#37049

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\cokse.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ADDCQ32.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSWH32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\APPMP.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\MFCEI.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ADDJF.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\NETHB.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\APPWG32.EXE

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Greyknight,
Thank you SO much for your help, and thanks for the heads up on geekstogo protocol. You all are providing a fantastic public service here. Much appreciation.

I followed your instructions to the letter. Everything seemed to go fine, and IE, for the moment, appears to be behaving correctly. The only minor deviation from your instructions was that most of the files you wanted me to delete in the final step (addcq.exe, mswh32.exe, etc) were not there anymore. I could only find cokse.dll, which I gleefully deleted.

Here's my AboutBuster log, followed by the most recent Hijackthis scan log.

Awaiting further instructions, if any. Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, I listed those files to delete just in case they were there. If they were not, then great.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
