Friend of mine bought a UM150 USB Modem

Friend went out and bought a UTStarcom UM150 USB modem with Alltel it lets him get on the internet wherever there is a Alltel tower.

Whats happens with him is he plugs it in and it works then at random times, it will freeze his entire computer up. There was software installed. What do you think could cause this?
