Hey folks,

A red background with a blackbox reading "Danger: Spyware" and some other notes promoting an anti-spyware program seems to have taken over my desktop. I followed some instructions on this site before and managed to get rid of the thing... but now it's back. I lost the original page of instructions I followed so I started in using instructions from this page... http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html.

This infection I see in your log should be removable by AVG. Check for any updates in your AVG program and then run a full system scan and remove any infected files found.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log. I assume the desktop is still a problem? I will help you fix that up if that's still there.

Yeah, I did run AVG but it seems to still be there (the red background)...

Hi Chris, I will help you fix up that background now. But make sure to post a new HijackThis log also since you ran AVG. I assume you checked for updates and ran AVG just now right? If not, please run it now since I see some things in the log that should be removed by AVG.

OK, for the wallpaper fix:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

Ok, I tried RepairDesktop.reg and it got rid of the background... and after I restarted.. it was still gone.. but I am still unable to right click... and when I went into display.. the red background showed up in the box. Also in the web tab, I didn't need to uncheck or delete anything... so it looks fine there.

Also, I'm pretty sure that HighjackThis log is from after I ran AVG... the odd thing is that AVG found like 40 something viruses (it's my parents computer), but only repaired like half of them.. so that might be why some of them showed up in the log.

Another quick update.. after running AVG again, I decided to try using RepairDesktop.reg file again... it got rid of the background and I can right click again, but the icons that were on the desktop before still aren't back (they came back the first time I fixed the problem).

I tried using that Desktop.reg and now all my colors are in 4Bit. I cant change anything! Help!

Hi Chris, why did you run the .reg file twice? If it worked the first time, don't run it a second time. Can you right click on the desktop though? If you can, make sure that the option to hide the Desktop icons is NOT enabled.

flatsix02, please don't follow any instructions here. You should also not post in someone else's topic. Create your own if you haven't done so already. It's best if we work on your log separately. If you posted a log already, I will take a look at it now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Messenger Plus - this program has a sponsor program. If you didn't install that sponsor, you may keep it. Otherwise uninstall it and reinstall without the sponsor program.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
