Hmmm

Start Hijackthis
Click "config" then "misc tools"
Beside "generate startuplist log" check both these options:

"list also minor sections"
"list empty sections"

Hit "generate startuplist log", say OK & post results.

Any more SNF messages?

Thanks :)

SNF

I do have a number of folders still in program files from old programs. Some empty, some not. Is it healthy to discard those?

Hey,

Leave those folders from uninstalled programs for now please.
I'll get a different log to show me whats there & we can weed out some of the empties after.
Empty folders pose no threat nor does it take up any hard drive space.

SNF issue first and I think I found it. :)

Couple questions before we perform next step:

When you guys are doing your eBay stuff ...
How is this done?
Simply log onto the site & upload pics and such for whatever you're selling?

Do you use remote desktop for work?
How about netmeeting? use it? Need it on steady? Or just use it once in a while for video conference?

Do you have a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) connected to this machine?

Thanks :)

Yes, just eBay and upload pics. Log into account to watch sales and list items.

I took online classes last 2 years and logged into college data banks. One of the professors said she had a virus or whatever during finals, and is why she couldn't grade fast. We could have gotten stuff from the college websites. WebCT was the one, and the actual sfcc.edu school login would sometimes state that it was over an unsecured path or something.

I have never used remote desktop or meetings. This is a desktop connected to wall outlet.

OK...

Temporarily disable DEfender & SAS so they don't scream & yell about our next actions.
Avast is OK to leave on.

Start> run> type services.msc and hit enter.
I suspect you know this tool well enough :)

Locate Application Management and set it to manual.
Apply & OK change.

Set the rest of the following services as specified:
Take you time & watch the display names carefully.
Some look similar to each other.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service: <-------- manual
ClipBook: <-------------------------------------------manual
Messenger: <----------------------disabled
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing: <------------- manual
Windows Installer: <-------------------------- manual
Network DDE: <---------------------------------- disabled
Network DDE DSDM: < ----------------------------- disabled
Net Logon: <------------------------------------- manual
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager: <----------- manual
Routing and Remote Access: <-------- disabled
Universal Plug and Play Device Host: <------ manual
Uninterruptible Power Supply: <--------------------------------- manual

Leave the others as-is.

OK your way out
Exit services.msc
REboot

Do me up fresh startuplist log from Hijackthis and let me know how machine is running.

NSF gone??

Thanks :)

While you were working in services.msc --- you accidently set this service to manual?

Cryptographic Services <--- should be automatic...

Reset it to auto> reboot> see if improvement.

Thanks :)

Hi again ..

You can also check this page which shows the default service settings for XP Home, Pro and "safe" settings.
Double check yours against the list and reset as necessary.
Go with the defaults for now for your Operating System till you get things working correctly.

As for the SNF errors...
Can you ping these sites?

Open a command prompt.
Type the following:

ping mail.google.com

You *should* get 4 replies at best with no "failures".

Next type:

ping www.myspace.com

Same thing --- should at best get 4 replies.

*note* You will need to allow ping.exe have internet access.

Just type exit and hit enter to exit the cmd window.

Let me know what happens to the ping commands and if you still get these network not encrypted messages.

Thanks
