Hello,

I've recently been hit with a virus downloaded from a viewer - (pripecs, pricep) something like that. After fiddling with removing it using Ad-Aware TrendMicro, CA Anti-Virus, etc. I found that the virus wouldn't go away after 3 days of trying, so I did a system recovery from my D: drive (Compaq doesn't give you reboot CD's).

I think I was able to get rid of my first virus, but then I was annoyed to find that after the system recovery I was the victim of "Win32.FTP Attack." I assume this came from being connected to the Internet when re-installing software after recovery, but without my anti-virus. I'm hoping it's not a "child" of the previous virus that somehow survived recovery.

Anyway, it's been 5 days since I attacked "win32.FTP Attack." I have CA Internet Security Suite - which originally showed the virus and then after deleting it, showed up without the virus. I also did some other checks on TrendMicro, Windows Defender and Ad-Aware and found nothing.

At this point, I would like to get on with my life I.E. visit banking sites, pay my bills online, etc. Am I clean, though? Is there someone who can check my hijack log and determine that I'm safe to rseume "normal" online activites?

Thanks.

Hi awprocks,

Sorry for the delay, the forum are very busy and inevitably some logs slip through the cracks.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Note:These logs may be too large to post in one reply, if so, please post extra.txt in a seperate reply.

Hi there awprocks,

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, if you come across something you don't understand or don't feel comfortable doing, don't hesitate to ask and I will get you sorted out :)
If you cannot complete a step in my instructions, please skip it and continue with the rest of my instructions and tell me in your next reply which one you were having trouble with.

I do not see any major cause for concern in your log, but we have a few things to do.

Step 1. Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step 2. Fixes with Hijack This

Please open HijackThis again and choose "Do a system scan only". Please put a check next to each of the following entries (if still present):

O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

Only fix the item in red if you did not add traymedia.com to your trusted sites zone in Internet Explorer.

Now please close all open windows except HJT and press "Fix checked".

We will need to unhide hidden system files temporarily.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mkghj.dll
There will be alot of funky named files in that folder, they are meant to be there, please only delete the one I specified above.

You may now REHIDE your system files by redoing the steps above but checking the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option"

Step 3. Running ATF Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step 4. Running Kaspersky Online Virusscaner

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").
  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.

Re-run Deckards' System Scanner and post back with Main.txt and the Kaspersky log.

Hi Mike,

I followed your suggestions in order. When I ran the Kaspersky Anti-Virus it found 3 viruses and 15 infections. It seems as though some of these infections were found in my D: Drive which scares me since that's where my system recovery is located (Compaq doesn't provide the sytstem install disks).

Hi there awprocks,

The items that Kaspersky found are nothing to worry about, the way the file acts is suspicious which is why Kaspersky flags them but they are indeed harmless from what my research tells me.

Your logs look clean! Are you experiencing any more problems?

You may fix these items in Hijack This if you wish to speed up your computers boot time as they are uneeded:

Thanks Mike!

I did a Google search on those same 'viruses' that Kaspersky found and it verified your research. Thanks, I do admit, however, when I saw 3 viruses on the scan, I nearly flipped out.

Anyway, I'm goingt o hold off on cleaning some of those registry keys -- I know a couple of them have to do with my CA Parental Controls and with Weatherbug which I want to keep for now. But thanks for the listing, and I'll consider removing them when and if I have troubel rebooting.

I do have one other issue that I can't diagnose. Recently, I've installed IE7. Since installation, I've had times when launching the browser, the home page will not appear, and IE7 will 'freeze' at the word 'connecting'. I simply open another browser and usually I can get to the homepage. I wasn't sure if this was an issue with my internet speed (since the yellow link light on my modem doesn't blink when IE7 freezes), or if there's some other issue at hand. If you know of anything that might be causing this, please let me know. Thanks.

I look forward to your reply on how to remove the software i've installed.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Hi there awprocks,

I'm glad to here that everything is running well.

As for you question about IE7, I'm sorry to say that I do not have an answer. I would recommend you going to the Web Browsers forum here at geekstogo and ask your question there. Be sure to mention that you have already been cleared of malware.

Now let's finish up things here.

Step 1. Running CleanUp!

Let's remove the tools I had you use.

Please open OTMoveIt2:
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

The below steps have some important tips on how to stay safe and keep up-to-date, so be sure to read it!

Step 2. Flushing old Restore Points and creating a new one

Right-click on "My Computer." The "System Properties" dialogue box will appear, showing a number of tabs. From here you can reset System Restore and configure Automatic Updates.

First, click the System Restore tab.

* Check the box beside "Turn off System Restore"
* Click "Apply"
* At the prompt, click "Yes"

Wait while your system deletes existing Restore Points, this may take a few moments.

* Uncheck the box beside "Turn off System Restore"
* Click "Apply"
* At the prompt, click "Yes"

Your system will now create a new Restore Point.

Step 3. Configuring Automatic Updates

Click the Automatic Updates tab. Choose the update option that best suits your needs, but be sure that Automatic Updates is not turned off. Windows XP will now notify you and download important updates and security patches as they become available.
Click "OK" to save your new settings and close the System Properties dialogue.

Step 4. Preventing future infection

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

There are many programs that can be used for your protection, most falling within the three main categories of anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. Please be careful to never run more than one program of the same category in resident mode, as conflicts between the different programs can actually decrease your protection.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :)

Please post back and tell me if everything is OK, so that I may mark this thread as Resolved.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you give me a link to OTMoveIt2, I don't think I have installed it yet.

Also, I did try and install Mozilla-Firefox, but I had trouble getting to any log-in pages. Be they Yahoo!, Google, or my e-mail from work, if I clicked on 'Log-in' the browser would not load the page. For that reason, I went back to IE7. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi there awprocks,

I don't believe that these issues are related to malware, and your logs back that up.

Try reinstalling firefox and see if that fixes the issue with that.
Also try running this for me http://www.fortify.net/sslcheck.html

post back the results of the sslcheck (at least what it says).

My apologies for not noticing that you haven't run OTMoveIt2 yet.
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

Hi Mike,

My SSL Check comes back as the following: RC4 cipher, 128-bit key

I'm working on the OTMoveIT2 now. I'll get back to you with results.

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

I installed the programs you recommended I.E. Spyware Blaster and Spyware Warrior. I then ran an Anti-Spyware check from my CA Internet Security and it found a trojan! I quarnatined and deleted the trojan, rebooted and luckily the trojan was gone.

Can I send you another Hijack This log to double check that I'm ok? Did I download something from the wrong source?
