After my last visit here and the success we had in removing some garbage from one of my office pc's I hope the trusted chaps at G2G can help me out again.

AVG has flagged up Trojan horse Downloader.Generic2.XQV. I have cleaned up the machine as much as I can so now it's just a case of removing the infection. Below is my HJT

Hi there and sorry for the delay - could I have a fresh look at your system

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi,

For some reason the DS Scanner keeps hanging when it tries to clean the temporary files, when I highlight the DSS window it says not responding. Is there anything else I can do?

*EDIT I got it working

Hmmm nothing apparent in that log. What is the location and file name that AVG is reporting ?

I will see what the next scan brings up before I do a really deep scan

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

This is the name and location of the file

Trojan horse Downloader.Generic2.XQV

C:\Documents and Settings\mikejnr\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ekc9rbyz.default\Cache\B430A06Bd01

I will now run MBAM and post the report in my next post.

Thanks

I have scanned using AVG but this time it hasn't brought anything up. However, the virus still shows as in the vault.

P.S Are the forums looking strange for anyone else at the moment? All I can see is plain text, no borders, no fancy bits no nothing.

You can delete it from the vault. Lets update your security whilst we are at it

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Is AVG still reporting after deletion from the vault, and are you experiencing any problems ?

Ok, I have deleted the file and updated Java.

I won't be able to run another AVG scan until tonight because it slows my machine down so much I am unable to work. I will run it later on tonight so if you can leave this thread open I will reply to you tomorrow.

Thanks for your help again M.

P.S - The forums still looks extremely strange for me, there are no borders or boxes anymore, just plain text. Anyone else having this problem?

EDIT* Forum looks ok now.
