Hi Folks.

I have a IBM Laptop running on W95 and wish to upgrade to W98.
I have a normal W98 disc.
Is this disc sufficient, or do I need the W98 upgrade disc.

Thanks.

Hi merelyanillusion, welcome to Geeks to Go!

The Windows 98 disk will upgrade from 95. An upgrade disk requires that a previous version of Windows be detected before it'll run setup, the disk you have does have this requirement.

That being said, I'd seriously consider fdisk, format, and performing a "clean install" of Windows 98. The upgrades often don't work too well, and any problems with your current setup can carry over to the upgrade.

Of course, a clean install requires thoroughly backing up all your data, and having to reinstall all your programs. Takes time, but it's worth it. <_<

<_< I don't have the knowledge to consider fdisk, format, and performing a "clean install" of Windows 98.
I tried installing the 98 from Cdr and the message came up that it can only be upgraded by Windows 98 Upgrade.
Is there any way round this.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but didn't work.
I have tried the Reinstall detailed in Admin's item dated 5/3, which I thought would do the trick.
The CDROM that I'm using is a Plug and Play External model, and when I delete the Win 95 O/S I lose the use of the CDRom.
Any suggestions on how I retain the use of the drive whilst deleting the 95 O/S enabling me to stick in the 98 O/S version.

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for all your help, but I just decided to get the upgrade disc.
It cost but solved the problem.
Thanks again.
