I have been using zonealarm firewall and antivirus on 2 PC's for a month now, and have had no problems at all. the one time I surfed to some questionable sites (as in, activex started downloading things without my permission using IE), the virus scan caught and removed the several trojans and exploits. (It was fortunate that a virus scan was scheduled within 10 minutes of when I hit that site loading activex stuff, so the bugs were caught quickly) since that one incident, I have been completely virus and trojan free.

they update their virus signatures quite often, almost everyday from what I have seen, so they seem to be on top of the latest bugs.

I also use microsoft anti-spyware, which is free, and am quite happy with how it performs- not a single spyware issue has turned up on either PC since installing it.
