firefox running slow & loses focus

Recently I have noticed a slowdown in Firefox's performance; so much so that several times I had to go back to IE (which honestly wasn't much better). Often, when I'll be typing something into a form, or scrolling a website, the browser will lose focus for no apparent reason. This becomes a particular problem when I've been typing a long entry (e.g. an e-mail or this post), and the form loses focus just as I hit the backspace button, causing firefox to go back to the last page in history. This is *infuriating*, as I'm sure you can tell.

I have installed various spyware detection and removal tools. They routinely detect malware, and remove them, but another scan will add more to this list. I would say I'm quite competent with technology, but this problem is beyond me.
