Touchpad Mouse is LAGGY?

My touchpad mouse on my laptop - A Thinkpad T40 - lags. In other words, it often "catches." The pointer will move across the screen, but then will get stuck for about a half second in one place before it moves forward again. I have defragmented, I don't have many excess programs, and I've installed the latest Windows updates. It's still doing it, though.

Any idea why this might be happening?
