software cannot update

I have a couple programs that cannot connect to their server for updates. One being taxcut and the other being pokerstars. Taxcut says that there is an error connecting to the server. Pokerstars always updates when you start it up, but as soon as you do it brings up an update failed box that says internet connectivity problem. Also firefox will not bring up any pages. It just says server not found. I'm thinking that all these problems are related. thanks in advance.
