Hello.

Yesterday morning I booted up our laptop and during the startup everything looked fine at first. However, by the time that the system was done, my desktop had changed to a red and yellow message stating that my system had been infected. When I started up Internet Explorer, the homepage had changed to antispider.us site. Also, security warnings had started to appear in the area next to my clock but having a problem with awola a while back, I knew not to click on them.

I found this site and have went through the steps listed in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Malware Cleaning Guide" post and things seems to have gotten better. The only problem I ran into was doing the online scan through Panda. The activescan would experience a problem during download and would never commence so I instead ran Avast! which was already installed on my system. However, I am still experiencing some issues like the fact that I can create restore points but I am unable to actually restore my system to an earlier point. Also, I had some problems with IE since I changed the page that it loads when started (to http://yahoo.com) where the page would begin to load and IE would shut down.

Could someone please take a look at my logs and help?

Thank you for your time.

Hi there and sorry for the delay - before I start

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine

You will need to uninstall either AVG7 or Avast

Having done that may I have a fresh look at your system

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello.

As requested, I have removed one of the two anti-virus programs that were installed (AVG7). Also, I downloaded and ran Deckard's system Scanner. The results in the main.txt and extra.txt files are below.

Thanks again.

Hi again. This will be a busy fix as I try to cripple the infection. I would recommend copying this post to a text file for reference

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

Download and run ERUNT http://www.larsheder...nline.de/erunt/

Start ERUNT, confirm the Welcome message.

Type in the name of a restore folder where the backed up registry
files should be saved, or click "..." to browse your computer's drives
and select a folder. You can also simply leave the default, which is a
folder named ERDNT inside your Windows folder, the advantage being
that you have access to this folder from the Windows Recovery Console
in case Windows does not boot anymore.

Next, select the backup options:

- System registry:

- Current user registy: .

- Other open user registries:

Click "OK" and wait until the backup process is complete. (Note that
depending on your system configuration this may take some time, and
that the first bar is NOT a progress bar, just an indicator that the
program is still running.) The ERDNT program for later restoration of
the registry is automatically copied to the restore folder.

WARNING these fixes are designed for this user only and may cause damage if run on an uninfected machine

REGISTRY FIX

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

Next you will need to create the repair registry fix to do that copy and paste ALL of the above in the quote box to a notepad file. Ensure there is no space above the REGEDIT4.
Then in notepad go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES
Then in the FILE NAME box type fix.reg
This will create a fix.reg file on your desktop Posted Image

To use this file you will need to right click the icon and select merge, accept the warning if it appears and you are done.

NEXT

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

OK then that revealed a few more to kill :)

As an Avast user I need you to do the following before using Combofix
1. Right click the Avast Icon and select Program Settings...
2. On the left select Troubleshooting
3. Place a tick in Disable Avast self defense module
4. Select OK
5. Right click the Avast icon again and select Stop On Access Protection

THEN

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

3. Then in the text file go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES

4. Save the above as CFScript.txt

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

How is your computer running now ?

Hello. I went through and did the ComboFix and HiJackThis and their logs are listed below. Things seem to be getting better (and a defragment probably wouldn't hurt either once I free up a little more space).

That looks good now - so I will help with the space clean up :)

Please download this small programme
http://download.blee...r/OTCleanIt.exe

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

Double click OTCleanIt and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Keep safe :)

Hello.

Well it looks like everything with the laptop is ok again. Ive created the restore points and cleaned up the old ones. I had already installed SuperAntispyware but I did go ahead and installed SpywareBlaster per your recommendation. I still have to do the Windows Update and I believe that will include the install of SP3.

I did have one question. During the help you gave me you had instructed me to do the following:

As an Avast user I need you to do the following before using Combofix
1. Right click the Avast Icon and select Program Settings...
2. On the left select Troubleshooting
3. Place a tick in Disable Avast self defense module
4. Select OK
5. Right click the Avast icon again and select Stop On Access Protection

Now that things look good again, do I need to go back into Avast and enable the self defense module again or is it something that it will do itself? Also, the OTCleanIt program did not get rid of Erunt. Is this a program I should keep or should I go ahead and uninstall it?

Thank you.

Yes re-enable Avasts self defence module (must remember to add that to my closing speech :) )

ERUNT is a usefull programme to have in the event that your registry becomes corrupted, but it is not essential so the choice is yours. It can be uninstalled via control panel

I have gone ahead and enabled the self-defense mode again.

I also wanted to say THANK YOU! :) I really appreciate all the help and time that you've given me which has helped me to reclaim my laptop from this infection. I am really glad that I found this site and am really considering signing up for GeekU so that maybe I could help someone too.

Thanks again!
