Hi All,

There is a new icon in the System Tray that looks like a shield with a white 'x' on red within it.
I've been getting various "Windows Security Center" balloons from my system tray. For example, one says:

"! Windows Security Center
*Latest software updates are not installed
*Incorrect files association
*System appears to hang
*Firewall has errors

Click baloon to fix the problem."

In each one, 'baloon' is misspelled...

I also get Internet Explorer Dialog boxes that say that "Virus was found on page" (insert any url here...) "It is highly recommended to install antivirus application. Click balloon to install powerfull antivirus application." Bad spelling and grammar included...

I've tried running Norton 360, but the computer automatically reboots (due to this virus thing, I'm sure, having to do with the lsass.exe file, I think) before the scan can finish. In any case it didn't look like it was finding anything.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me!

Thanks for responding! I've been looking at the Malware Cleaning Guide above in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" thread. I haven't tried it yet, so I'll try that stuff early this afternoon and post the results.

Alright, overall this log doesn't look too bad. Although that doesn't mean there aren't some thing hiding out Follow these steps in order and we'll see what we can find.

STEP ONE
Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

STEP TWO
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

• Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
• An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
• If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
• Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
• Click the Scanning Control tab.
• Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
  • Close browsers before scanning.
  • Scan for tracking cookies.
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
• Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
• Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
• On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
• On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
• Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
• After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
• Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
• A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
• If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
• To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
  • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
  • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
  • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
• Click Close to exit the program.

STEP THREE
Also, You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')
Please make sure you post the entire log including the top portion:

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Ok, I was following the Malware Cleaning Guide in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" thread on this board, so I didn't do everything in the order you listed below. (I hope that's not disastrous) Here's what I did do:

• I downloaded, installed and ran ATF Cleaner.
• Next I created a System Restore point in Windows XP.
• Next I downloaded, installed and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I'll paste the logfile at the end of this post.
• Next I downloaded, installed and ran SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition. I'll paste the logfile at the end of this post.
• I went to the Panda Activescan website and did its scan.
  While the scan was progressing, I looked back at this thread and saw your instructions... Once the scan was complete, I saved the logfile. Unlike Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware, I don't think this actually disinfected anything--from what I could tell, it just identified the infected files, but did not delete them or anything.
• I followed your instructions and created the c:\HJT directory and ran HiJackThis and saved the log file.

Your logs look good. Are you still experienceing the popup issues? There is just one other thing for you to do now to help prevent further infections.

STEP ONE
Upgrading Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
• Click on Continue.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Also, the following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annihilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• Avast! Anti-Virus - A free for home use anti-virus program.
  
• ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• JKDefrag - A disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista. It is completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead and has several optimization strategies. After downloading the zip file, just extract JKDefrag.exe to your desktop and double click.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Pidgin - A Malware free Instant Messenger program which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MyspaceIM, GTalk)
