gerryf,

Do you recommend I reinstall Norton Utilities and Norton AntiVirus?

Thanks,

For the sloooooooow shutdowns - problems occured before broadband, and continued afterwards.

For the two windows I described - after broadband...but, was also having the slow shutdowns..

To add more to the pile. It now appears that the 'two windows' problem I described is intermittent. Maybe 6 out of every 10 shutdowns/restarts the Explorer.exe window and the HiddenFaxWindow window show up.

I'm stumped.

Used GlarySoft Registry Repair...some progress, but windows still popping up. I am now running AVG Free Edition for virus protection, since I was nervous about not having any virus protection.

Problem remains. Explorer.exe won't shut down. Neither does HiddenFaxWindow.

Losing hope.
