Hello,

Lately my computer has been freezing on random occasions. I have had problems with a system restore infection in the past and I am wondering if that is the problem now. I currently have system restore turned off and the computer is running better, but it still freezes periodically. Panda firewall reports that connection attempts are being made to my comp when the freezes take place. Oddly, some of these connections are being attempted from my IP address.

Also, when I do a Panda virus scan or a Spyware Doctor scan, they come up as being malware free. Something is wrong though. Just do not know what.

Here is my HJT log:

I have looked at my Panda antivirus reports. The attempted connections have occurred since 4/25. On 4/25, I posted another thread about spyware (adware.podcastbar mini) infecting my computer. That was resolved at the time, but I am guessing that whatever is going on with my computer has to do with that. I am guessing it is not system restore, but instead it is that infection. It must be deeper in my computer than what has been detectable so far.

Hi there sorry for the delay. I will approach this in a different way to normal and go for a deep scan first

We will now do a deep search of your processes and files

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: Posted Image
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the "Healing/Quarantine and Advanced System Investigation" check box.
  • Click on the “Execute selected scripts”.
  • Automatic scanning, healing and system check will be executed.
  • A logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be created and saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscure.zip.
  • It is necessary to reboot your machine, because AVZ might disturb some program operations (like antiviruses and firewall) during the system scan.
  • All applications will work properly after the system restart.

When restarted

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the “Advanced System Investigation" check box.
  • Click on the "Execute selected scripts".
  • A system check will be automatically performed, and the created logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscheck.zip.

Attach both zip files to your next post

Hi the deep scan showed no anomalous drivers or services, and no indications of rootkits. :)

So I will now move up a level

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Does Panda indicate which file is trying to access ?

All Panda indicates are IP addresses trying to access the comp that were blocked. One of those is my own IP address. On 4/25 I added Malware Bytes antimalware. Could it be trying to connect for updates? In any case I am about to run the DSS. Thanks! Also, the computer is much faster now, for whatever odd reason.

I only posted main.txt. I closed the other file by mistake. I am running it again. Sorry. Extra.txt does not seem to be loading again. Main.txt did. I am still waiting.

All Panda indicates are IP addresses trying to access the comp that were blocked

That happens all the time, it may be your IP or just a random computer sweeping around. These are normally blocked silently by your firewall

The extra text should be at C:\deckard\scanner no need to run it again

Nothing evident there either. Are you still experiencing freezing as DSS restarted system restore

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I uninstalled older java components and installed the latest update. The computer is running faster than it has in awhile. I am not sure why, but so far so good. Did AVZ make any changes to the comp that might have helped?

AVZ deleted a few (OK one ) suspect on the first cleaning run, although my understanding of that file shouldn't have made a major difference. Maybe I was wrong, but it is nice to be wrong in a good way :)

What I would suggest is you now leave it for one day and then report back if you are having any more problems or not. Subject to that I will then finalise securing your system :)
