I was one of those whose computer crashed after initially installing SP2. Is it safe to install it now, or will I have the same problem?

Well, if the problem was an incompatible driver, and you still have that device driver installed, then no. You'll have the same problem. Make sure you have all your device drivers up to date with the latest-greatest. I know there have been some "tweaks" to the SP but I'm not sure exactly what was tweaked. Do you know why it crashed last time? Was there a specific error or did it just die?
