When Apple made it's change to the Intel platform I downloaded a version of the code that worked on my PC!
Don't know what version or if it was a leak or something.

How is it now days, possible to install to a regular PC, or must it be the apple steel?

I believe part of Apple's terms is that it has to be installed on Apple hardware. And even though it's an Intel system much of Apple hardware is proprietary and you may have trouble with drivers for things like the network, firewire, graphics, etc..
