I cloned my old hard drive to a new one and the computer was running ok but the cd and dvd drives were not showing up in my computer or in the bios.
Now windows xp home starts up but freezes at windows is starting up screen and takes a very long time to bootup.
I used Acronis True image to clone the hard drive.
How do I get my cd and dvd drive recognized? They work ok and I checked all cables inside and replaced battery on motherboard.

If your CD drive is not shown in the BIOS then the issue has nothing to do with the hard drive. Here are some possible causes:

Drives are not physically connected properly. Double check you connections.

CD drive is dead.

IDE or SATA port on the board is bad.

I rechecked all the connections, the cd and dvd trays open and close and the disks spin. They are not being recognized.
All was working ok before swapping hard drives.

Hello wsx123,

Maybe you have a problem with jumper settings. Check if your Hard drive has settings for primary master, cd and dvd drives primary slave and secondary master.

The new hard drive is on cable select.

Try to set the new hard drive as primary master with jumper. On your Hard Drive you have ilustrations for settings that.

The hard drive I removed was set to cable select. I have an older Dell Dimension 2400 and the manual says put the hard drive on cable select.

Lets try this again.... Put the HDD jumper on master and the CD Drive jumper to slave.

Try it with each drive on a separate IDE Channel?

If this is the case, put HD's on cable in one IDE Channel 1 with jumper settings "cable select", and the CD/DVD on another IDE Channel 2 with jumper settings "secondary master " and "secondary slave" . Blue connector to the motherboard, black to either Hard Drive , grey middle connector to CD and DVD.

My motherboard has one connection where the single hard drive cable was plugged in and not connected to anything else. Another connection is for the cd drive and separate dvd drive which are connected with a shared cable to another separate connection on the motherboard.
I tried putting hard drive on master and nothing changed.
I put my old hard drive in an external usb enclosure and I can access it. Is there any way I can copy my original system files and install them on the new hard drive?
When I did the disk clone it was to the new hard drive that was in the usb enclosure which I removed and installed in the desktop.
If I get this mess straightened out I think I am switching to open suse 11 linux.

Does the hard drive cable have two connections?
If it does-
Connect the old hard drive like it was and worked.
Check it to make sure your optical drives can be seen again-cd/dvd.

Connect the new hard drive to the slave connection of the hard drive cable.
Either cable select or slave jumper settings.
Your old hard drive should be on the end connection of the cable.

Check to see if you can see the slave drive in My Computer.

Follow the directions for this program to migrate all your files to the drive you set as slave which will become the master after you are done and be connected to the end of the cable. Then you can use the other drive as the slave. It will be empty after this program is run.

But everything and all your programs annd settings will be the same as the old drive.

This is what to use for your specific operation. Not True Image.
This has a trial period but is fully functional and works.
IF you follow the directions it gives it Will Work.

I connected the old hard drive and I could not find any cd or dvd drives anywhere.
I connected my old hard drive in an external usb housing and I have access to it.

The entries were there and I deleted. I still have the same problem.

Could be a bad connection or bad cable.
Do you have any spares?
Or try your hard drive cable.
When it boots up it will find the cd but not the hard drives.
You will see it in the boot messages.

Another thought is to switch the ribbon cables at the motherboard.
