Hello everyone.
I've come for some badly needed help and see that I am not alone in this.
Very persistent infection here, whereby a red circle with a white x appears in my task bar and the following message keeps appearing within seconds from each other:
"Your computer is infected windows has detected spyware infection! it is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up to date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware."

The message appears to be an authentic Windows Security warning and upon following the link (clicking the red circle) the evidence of the sham becomes obvious with the advert asking for a purchase to proceed to clean the system of the errors it has found.

It gets more challenging. In the past when troubleshooting, I've taken snapshots of my registry with Spybot but now my program won't even start up? I can see the little icon for it in the taskbar and can open everything else associated with this software except for the main screen. I even attempted to download and install AVG anti virus, but that to craps out before installation. I also have Ad Aware (the free version) and only that will open up okay for me. I hope this is one weapon in my diminishing arsenal that can serve a purpose in my fight.
Thanks for any help in advance and I look forward to beating this with you

Hello ugrinwa, and welcome to Geeks to Go. :)

Click here to download HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi Jimmy 2012

It looks like this malware has the upper hand (so far) I've followed your instructions and although the icon appears on my desktop it fails to load just as was the case for some other tools that I wanted to run (ie Spybot SD) It gets worse as now, when I follow any link on IE I am redirected to a page that looks like it part of the same "purchase software scam" I've attached an image for you to see as this is what always pops up now. This is actually my second time typing this to you since it prevents me from sending it immediately.

Please please help me rid this.
I recall creating a system restore point about a year ago. Do you think I should give that a try? Not sure what the consequences might be to files I've worked on since then but anything is better (there it goes again) then that annoying alert pop up.

Thanksfor replying so promptly.

Kept reading and saw somewhere to rename HJ.exe. That changed the icon from a avatar like man to some explosive icon which I recognized. The program still failed to open but after bringing up windows task manager window and arbitrarily killing processes I was able to launch it.
Here is my log.

Hello ugrinwa,
If you have any questions please feel free to ask. :)

I recall creating a system restore point about a year ago. Do you think I should give that a try?

Right now there is no need to do that, we will take care of the infection on your computer. :)

STEP 1
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
STEP 2
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

STEP 3
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
In your next reply please have these logs.
The SDFix log
The SmitFraudFix log
And the DSS main.txt and extra.txt
Hello ugrinwa,
I do not see a Firewall on your computer. A firewall can help protect you from Hackers and some types of Malware. I recommend you download a firewall. Here are 2 to chose from(both are free).
Comodo
Zone Alarm
Out of these 2 I would recommend Comodo, please only install one firewall at a time. If you need any help installing/using one of these firewalls please let me know.
STEP 1
While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
STEP 2
Please reopen HijackThis and click on Do a system scan only.And put a check next to the following entries.
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZCfox000
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: cru629.dat
Once you have the checks in those entries please make sure all open windows are closed(keep HijackThis open) and click fix checked on HijackThis. A box will open up asking if you want to fix the selected items, please click yes. After you have fixed those entires you can close HijackThis.
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ywudenijig.pif
    C:\WINDOWS\kecowa.sys
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\natixuvary.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ehekilyx.reg
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jack\Application Data\fijivicesa.db
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\yfucojydu.ban
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\nebotul.ban
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
STEP 3
Please rescan with DSS. To do this please double click on dss.exe and follow any prompts. When it is done it will open up one notepad main.txt. Please copy/paste the text in main.txt in your next reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~
In your next reply please have these logs.
The OTMoveIt2 log
And the DSS main.txt

Thanks Jimmy2012.

I will follow your instructions shortly. In the meantime taking you up on a previous response I have a quick question. Yes you are right that there was no firewall currently on, but this was because I turned off the firewall from windows security options since I could no longer tell based on the similarities between the spam virus messages and the real thing. I will follow you advice and obtain Comodo. Should I do that right away or wait till we finish cleaning/fixing?

Secondly, what about purchasing a hardware firewall/router? Does this serve the same protection as just the software option or more/less?

Will post back after I follow these next steps.
So far you've made this a walk in the park for e and I appreciate that!

You can install Comodo now. :)

I don't see any need to buy that, Comodo should be fine for you.

Hi Jimmy2012,

Here are the two logs
I've also now installed Comodo but have the feeling that I should disable it until we resolve this issue since it is asking me during the checks if I want to continue...
Thus far I always selected "yes" and even "allow trusted application" when the firewall kept interupting.
Well I hope I've followed along correctly up until now and hope these log files assist you.

One last thing, I should mention that my PC today for some reason was running slower then yesterday and just to mention a yellow shield was aking me to download updates on my pc (in the task bar) I selected yes since it looked authentic unlike the others, and when the status bar did not move I cancelled and was notified that the updates (Microsoftanti-virus protection) could not complete. I hope this is not that nasty pop up again. BTW, since we did the last set of instructions (from yesterday) no more pop ups :)
