Path search window in Office apps hanging

Hi all.

Some days ago a new strange trouble appeared on my PC (OS: XP)

When I start opening a document using an Office app — such as Excel — and click in the "open file window" to search through the directory tree, it stays hanging for a lot of seconds before reacting. That for each click till reaching the desired directory.
To avoid going crazy, I'm opening my files by Explorer, but it's very annoying.
What happened?
Could anyone hint me anything to check/do?
