In advance, Id like to thank anyone that provides assistance for this issue.

I have Windows XP home edition (its my home pc) and I somehow managed to download this joke-bluescreen.c program. It changed my background to blue with a warning message and installed some sort of AntiVirusXP type program shortcut. McAfee detected it and says its removes its but when I rescan, it still finds it. I did a system restore to an earlier date and my background returned to normal, and all of the shortcuts/programs that were on the desktop were gone. However, McAfee still detects this PUP program.

There are no performance issues, no popups, or problems with the internet connection.

If someone could please advise me step by step on how to remove this program fully from my computer, it would be greatly appreciated. Id like to fix this issue before it potentially progresses.

Thanks

Hello lionfan,

Welcome to Geeks to Go. :)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello lionfan,

Please read through the following instructions and if there is anything that you don't understand, please post your questions before proceeding.

It is important that you follow these instructions exactly as I have listed. Failure to adhere to this could result in damage to your Registry Settings and the possibility of not being able to boot your computer or other unexpected events occurring.

You will need to print out a copy of these instructions and also save them to NotePad and put a shortcut to the file on the desktop so that you can refer to while you complete this procedure.

It is important to backup the Registry before we make any changes so that we have a fresh copy in case of misfortune. Please click on Start then Run and copy the following code into the command line.

regedit /e C:\RegBU.reg

Click the OK button or press the Enter key. This will save a copy of the Registry to a file (C:\RegBU.reg) on your local hard drive.

Please be carefull if you download and play online poker games. Malware/Adware can be inadvertantly be downloaded with some of them.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis (including any browser windows), then click Fix Checked.

Open Notepad, and copy the contents of the code box below into a new text file. Save it on your Desktop as FixReg.reg. For the "save as type" choose all files.

REGEDIT4

[-hkey_current_user\software\sysinternals\bluescreen]
  • Locate FixReg.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
  • You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
  • Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Boot into Safe Mode: You can do this by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please go to Start then Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Be sure that you can view hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\PokerStars
C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker
C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker
C:\Program Files\Bodog
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msshed32.exe

Reboot the computer normally.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
