I've had an absolute nightmare trying to clean my computer up after a nasty attack a few days ago when AVG detected a threat. Anyway, it was spyware making me think it was a virus with fake windows popups telling me to go download an anti-virus to fix it. VIRUS ALERTS! were everywhere, my start menu was hijacked etc etc. Since then, I've used malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy to try to clean up, but sometimes AVG still pops up with these threats. Sometimes 4 in a row. So now I have 18 infections in my virus vault (most of them are in my system32 folder). I've been scanning and everything seems ok at the moment, but I feel like this stuff is still in here and it's gonna come back. I'd feel alot better knowing it's all gone.

I hope I'm not breaking a rule or anything, so please don't flame me. Here's my hijackthis log. Let me know what else I should do! And I see in the log easy gof animator and msn stuff. I don't use this stuff so i probably need to get rid of it. Viewpoint media player i cannot get rid of because i have aim and if i uninstall viewpoint, aim jsut reinstalls it.

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Please uninstall your AVG7 and replace it with AVG8 Free..

I noticed you already have Malwarebytes' in your PC.. Please run and update it..
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please include a fresh DSS log (after Malwarbytes' step) in your next reply.. Tell me about your computer behaviour...

Regards

I uninstalled AVG 7.5 (along with the 18 trojans in vault) and installed AVG 8. I scanned with it and found no threats. Just browser tracking cookies. Anyway, here's the Malwarebytes log:

Good news.. Your log looks clean to my eyes....

Now should I just keep combofix along with the windows recovery console at startup?

I strongly suggest you leave the Recovery Console at the startup.. Please manually delete ComboFix and C:\qoobox folder from your computer..

Please Install/Update Sun Java

Updating Java:
  • Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  • It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Select it and click Remove. This will uninstall the previous (outdated) version of Java.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7

Let's clean your Restore Points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous Restore Points which are likely to be infected)
To create a new Restore Point.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK. This will flush your old System Restore.
  • Then please UNCHECK the Turn off System Restore.
  • Click again on Apply, and then click OK. This will create a new Restore Point
System Restore will now be active again

If you are using Windows Vista, please go HERE for tutorial on how to use, disable and enable System Restore

I noticed you already have..

1. AVG8 as your antivirus
2. Malwarebytes' as your antispyware..

However, I haven't seen any third-party firewall in your logs.. Do you have any? If you don't, please install ONLY ONE of these free and excellent firewall below:
After you install the third party firewall, please disable your Windows firewall. Please go to My Computer >> Control Panel >> Windows Firewall and choose Off (not recommended) option. Then please click Apply and Ok.

And now, to help protect your computer in the future I would like to recommend you these following free programs. Please do remember to use only ONE "Real-Time Protection" software for EACH Antivirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall.
  • SpywareBlaster 4.0 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

Lastly, to keep your operating system up to date please visit the link below monthly

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this excellent article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please also read an excellent article by miekiemoes :Help! My computer is slow!

And another excellent article by CastleCops Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection

Please reply to this thread once more and tell us about the computer behaviour before we can close this thread :)

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Thanks! Computer seems to be running fine. However, about the 3rd party firewall thing... I remember completely removing Norton from my computer about a year or 2 ago. But in my firewall settings, it says "Norton Internet Security is currently ON". If I turn on windows firewall too, it will say "At least one firewalls installed on this computer is ON". So I'm not sure what to do about that...

Erm.. I dont see any Norton Firewall inside your log.. So, I suggest you just install one of the third party firewall and then disable the Windows firewall after that..

Installed Comodo Firewall Pro. Everything is working great. Although in my systems firewall settings it still says " at least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is ON. having more than one running can conflict with each other blah blah blah". I guess it's fine though. Like I said. Norton has been out of my computer for a long time. But it's always said this. Oh well.

Thanks so much for the help! everythings great :)
