usb doesn't acknowledge

When I plug in my usb cord from printer or camera card it doesn't make the little ding sound. In services it shows plug and play started and enabled, but when I try to open hp solutions for my printer it says no hp devices have been detected, center will now close. In the last couple weeks I have ben running some of the registry programs and spy ware programs to find out why my computer has been typing so slow. I'm afraid one of them has made some kind of change to my system.
