Thank you for helping with this.

I have a popup that happens at online checkouts (any sort of form with Credit Card info while shopping online). Just started about 3 days ago. The popup says "Advanced Verification" and has a Mastercard Logo (not a visa, but mastercard logo).

I did preparation steps from sticky post. Malwarebytes found 2 Trojan.Zlob and it said successfully removed, but the popups still happens.

I have made 2 online purchases (with same card) since that popup so I have canceled that card just in case (so far was no fradulent purchases).

Here is the Hijack

Hi there,

I notice you have no Anti-Virus program installed on your computer. These programs are necessary in keeping your computer free of malware, without it you are very likely to get re-infected within a very short period of time.
I would like you to download one of these free programs I have listed here for you.
Note: Make sure to only install ONE program, as having more can cause confliction between these programs, which in turn lowers your protection and slows down your computer.
AntiVir

Install, update and run a full scan.

Now,

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Once done, uninstall any older versions of Java through add or remove programs.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Note:These logs may be too large to post in one reply, if so, please post extra.txt in a seperate reply.

Also,

Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread. If the results are long please attach it in your next reply.

To attach a file, do the following:* Click Add Reply
* Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
* Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
* Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
* Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks for the quick repy.

I have WebRoot Antivirus with Spysweeper (paid version). It does a virus sweep every Sunday and showed a Mal/Zloob-R in the last manual sweep that I did on tuesday....said it quarentined it, but popup still happens.

If this isn't good enough antivirus please let me know and I will unistall it and download one of the two antivirus that you mentioned.

Thanks

Guy

If you have the paid version, then it's OK to keep, I do not know how it fairs since I have never used it before myself,

Post the logs and we will see what can be done :)

Hi there,

It looks like I was on track with having you do a rootkit scan, you have the MBR rootkit which we will attempt to get rid of now.

Out of curiosity, would you mind telling me where you got infected? If so please send me a Private Message (under my name go on send message) and tell me, I would be grateful.

First off you have some remnants of symantec (norton) on your PC, I would run the Norton removal tool just to get rid of them http://service1.syma...005033108162039

Now then,

Please download mbr.exe by GMER.

Save the file to your desktop.

Go to start then run and in the box that appears please copy and paste the following.

"%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

A DOS window will appear and disappear, afterwards a log will be produced on your desktop mbr.log.

Copy and paste the contents of that log here please.

Here is the log

Stealth MBR rootkit detector 0.2.4 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: MBR read successfully
kernel: MBR read successfully
MBR rootkit code detected !
malicious code @ sector 0x12a050fc size 0x1fd !
copy of MBR has been found in sector 62 !
MBR rootkit infection detected ! Use: "mbr.exe -f" to fix.
original MBR restored successfully !

I am not sure where the computer was infected. I have an employee that uses the computer so I will ask them if they went somewhere. Would it help if I set up and administrative, and limited employee access in XP?

Thanks

It would definitely help - from a limited account viruses couldn't spread as easily since there are restrictions on some of the permissions they usually use.

Let's make sure we got the rootkit, are you still getting the popups <--- it's important to know.

Do this for me please, delete mbr.log from your desktop
Double click on mbr.exe - it will produce a log mbr.log, post the contents here.

Also let's get an online scan to see if everything is dandy with your PC otherwise :)

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Once done, uninstall any older versions of Java through add or remove programs.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Nope your logs look clean to me :)

If you by chance find out where he got infected PM me.

Please download OTCleanIt.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double Click on OTCleanIt.exe, a window will appear.
  • Please press the CleanUp! Button.
This will remove the tools we used during the process of cleaning your computer.

mbr.exe may not be deleted by this - if so simply delete the file itself.

Right-click on "My Computer." The "System Properties" dialogue box will appear, showing a number of tabs. From here you can reset System Restore and configure Automatic Updates.

First, click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the box beside "Turn off System Restore"
  • Click "Apply"
  • At the prompt, click "Yes"
Wait while your system deletes existing Restore Points, this may take a few moments.
  • Uncheck the box beside "Turn off System Restore"
  • Click "Apply"
  • At the prompt, click "Yes"
Your system will now create a new Restore Point.

Now that your are clean, you'll want to stay that way.

Some important things that you should keep in mind in order to protect yourself:
  • Use common sense. This is the big one! Don't download programs from suspicious sites and be careful where you browse.
Things you can do to avoid downloading bad programs:
    • Google the program. Read reviews and opinions from other people on the internet, if you dont see any reports of foul play - then there more than likely is none.
    • Stay away from Cracks! However luring the thought of free software can be it's not worth the hassle and potential danger of getting infected.
    • Download the program directly from the website of the developer - then you can be certain you haven't downloaded a bogus copy.
    • Read the EULA (End User License Agreement) - Find out exactly what you are downloading. A good tool to aid you in this would be EULAyzer.
  • Keep your programs updated! Software developers update their programs to patch possible security risks. Do a scan once in a while for outdated programs using Secunia's Software Inspector
  • Keep your protection programs up to date! No matter how good your Antivirus or Antispyware program is, without an updated set of definitions it will do you no good against the new infections. If you run a free program make sure to update them at least once a week.
  • Make sure that windows updates is enabled. Keeping your system up to date is a must - to turn on automatic updates take a look at this article by Microsoft.
I have listed two programs to boost your security while using no resources.
  • SpywareBlaster Take a look at the tutorial here.
  • ZonedOut Adds thousands of websites to your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Also consider using an alternative web browser. Two big named ones, both far superior to Internet Explorer in terms of security and performance, would be Firefox and Opera.

Make a habit of scanning your computer for viruses every week or so and backing up important files regularly.
