Hi,
I believe trojan got downloaded some days back on my laptop. I dont know how though. Probably Mcafee installed on my machine was able to remove the virus. But I am not sure if the virus has been destoyed or not. I still get a bad blue screen "spyware detected on computer" and I tried in vain to get rid of this.

How do I get rid of this blue screen and how can I be confirmed that my computer is now safe of viruses.....

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Regards,
Mani

Hi Mani_b,

I'm doing some investigation into the infection you have.

Please go to UploadMalware to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\Documents and Settings\Chinatamani Bhadti\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmimpro.jar-54e206d6-56c8d9a4.zip
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File

First next step:

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Then I'd like to do some search for the root of the problem.

1. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the quote box below into a new Notepad file. Save it with file name options.txt and save as file type: all files to your desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
{019408f6-bc20-49b0-b110-aca7a16cc9fb}

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLU

2. Download Registry Search to your desktop.
  • Right click on the compressed RegSearch folder, and choose "Extract All". In the box that pops open, click "Next", then "Next" again, and then "Finish". You now have another RegSearch folder on your desktop.
  • Open the new folder, and double click on regsearch.exe
  • Click "Import" in the lower left corner and browse to the options.txt file that you just saved on your desktop. Do not choose the one in the RegSearch folder itself.
  • Click OK and Registry Search will scan your registry for the file(s), and a Notepad box will open with a report.
  • Please reply here with the entire contents of the Notepad file from RegSearch.

Thanks a lot. That was a big help. :)

First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Registry Fix

Please open up an instance of Notepad.
  • Click on:
    • Start, then
    • All Programs, then
    • Accessories, then
    • Notepad
  • Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{019408f6-bc20-49b0-b110-aca7a16cc9fb}]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
    "CLSID"=-

  • Save it as "All Files" and name it RemoveFilter.reg. Let the location be your desktop.
  • Navigate to your desktop.
  • Double click RemoveFilter.reg
  • A window will prompt you to Merge RemoveFilter.reg with the Windows Registry, this is normal. Choose Yes/Ok.

Then follow the instructions here to clear your Java cache.

And then under Start > Control Panel > Display > on the Desktop tab click Customize Desktop
Then on the Web tab check if anything is checked in the Web Pages box.

If so let me know what it is called and click the Properties button to find more information, like where it is located.
Then remove the checkmark. Then click OK, Apply, OK and close the Panel.

After all that reboot the computer, run HijackThis and post a fresh log.
Also let me know if your computer is behaving normal now.

I did not find Desktop tab on Start > Control Panel > Display.....
I have till now backed up registry, new registry entry was added, cleared java cache and rebooted the machine.

So I could not follow below steps

"And then under Start > Control Panel > Display > on the Desktop tab click Customize Desktop
Then on the Web tab check if anything is checked in the Web Pages box.

If so let me know what it is called and click the Properties button to find more information, like where it is located.
Then remove the checkmark. Then click OK, Apply, OK and close the Panel
"

Let me know how do I proceed now.

Thanks!

Mani

Hi Mani_b,

You can use HijackThis to fix these leftovers:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Were you unable to find or use the "Customize Desktop" button?
Or what exactly was the problem finding the way to the Web tab?

I have cleared the two files as suggested.

See screen shot attached.

I do not see desktop tab anywhere or customize desktop button in any of the tabs.

Also the blue screen with yellow background cannot be changed still.

Thanks again that you are spending so much time on this...

Regards,
Mani

OK. I see the desktop tab is missing.

Is that XP pro you are using?
Then you can use this method to get it back:
http://www.theelderg...rom_display.htm

Let me know if that works, or I'll find another way.

Yes I am using XP professional.

Its already set to not configured as mentioned in the link :)

I tried to follow this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922370
But could not find classic shell in registry - of course I took back up before touching registry...

Scanned google for different options but I am actually waiting for your suggestion :)

Let me know to proceed.

Regards,
Mani

OK. There are two keys I want to look at.

Copy the text in the CODE box below into notepad and save it as policies.bat
Best save it directly in the C: directory, because that is where the result will show up.
reg QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" > C:\registry.txt
reg QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" >> C:\registry.txt
notepad C:\registry.txt

After you doubleclick policies.bat notepad should open with the results.
Can you post them for me?

OK. I think I found the reason. :)

Copy the text in the CODE box below into notepad and save it as fixpols.bat
Best save it directly in the C: directory.
reg ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /v NoDispScrSavPage /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0
reg ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /v NoDispBackgroundPage /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0
del C:\policies.bat
del C:\registry.txt

Doubleclick the file and check to see if the tabs are back.
If they are, proceed as posted earlier.

Fingers crossed. :)
