Hello redfindolph, Welcome to Geeks-To-Go.

My name is Gravity Gripp and I'll be working with you on these issues. For now, I will be reviewing your log but will be responding back soon. Also, please note that I am still in training so there may be a slight delay in my responses because I will be working with an expert on this.

I look forward to working with you :)

redfindolph, first I see a few items that we need to take care of and I need you to produce a little more in depth log.

STEP ONE
I see that you are running two Anti-Virus programs. Symantec and Avast. While both are good, running two at one time can cause a lot of problems and make your computer run very slow. Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
It is my recommendation that before we proceed any further that you remove one of the two. If your subscription has ran out on Symantec, I suggest removing it and going with Avast.

STEP TWO
I also noticed that you have TeaTimer running and once again it is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
.

STEP THREE
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

redfindolph, the information that you have posted is pretty generic and doesn't really tie you to it. What we do with this information is analyze it (most of the time by just viewing and sometimes by the help of software) and based on what we see here, we can determine what kind of infection you have and give you the proper course of action to remove it. The data can also be used to help train others and some of our other helpers can go back and look over how we perform. And lastly, no there is nothing seriously wrong that we can't fix here :) In fact, we're getting close to being done.

STEP ONE
  • Please right click on HiJackThis choose "Run As Administrator" on the Navilog1 shortcut icon from your Desktop to run it.
  • Press E for English from the language Menu.
  • Type 2 in the next Menu and press Enter.
  • The tool will then advise you that it will restart your computer.
  • Close all open windows and save personnal documents, if any are open.
  • If your computer doesn't restart automatically, restart it manually.
  • Choose your usual session.
  • Wait for the *** Clean finished the ... *** message (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
  • A new document will be produced.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Your Desktop will now appear.

Note : In the event you lose your Desktop, press CTRL+ALT+Delete and run Explorer.exe as a new task.

The report is also saved in the root directory, %SystemDrive%\cleannavi.txt.. (usually C:\cleannavi.txt)

STEP TWO
Please right click on HiJackThis choose "Run As Administrator", once it has opened, click scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gwgwq] c:\users\michael\appdata\local\gwgwq.exe gwgwq

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

STEP THREE
  • Please right click on HiJackThis choose "Run As Administrator" on OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\gwgwq
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{2dd97e7f-6822-11dc-a790-0016d4dc98e5}
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6eb1adda-6448-11dc-bbae-0016d4dc98e5}
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6eb1adbc-6448-11dc-bbae-0016d4dc98e5}
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{90723a1e-8d0b-11dc-a93a-0016d4dc98e5}
    Purity
    EmptyTemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Then, please provide a new DSS log.

Good news, we are done here. Unless you are having any issues, your computer is clean. Lets do some cleanup.

STEP ONE
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

STEP TWO
Also, The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • MalwareBytes Anti-Malware - A powerful anti-malware tool which can remove malware that may find it's way onto your system.
  • Avast! Anti-Virus - A free for home use anti-virus program.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • JKDefrag - A disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista. It is completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead and has several optimization strategies. After downloading the zip file, just extract JKDefrag.exe to your desktop and double click.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Pidgin - A Malware free Instant Messenger program which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MyspaceIM, GTalk)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
