I'm trying to find a viable option to upgrade the memory on a Dell Precision M70 Laptop http://support.dell....s.htm#wp1052326

Currently running with 1 GB RAM on a 32 Bit Windows XP OS.

Dell specifies that the maximum memory supported is 2 GB (2 X 1024 MB Sticks). Is there any possible way I could use 2 X 2 GB sticks? I realize that the 32 Bit XP operating system will only recognize something like 3.25 GB, so is that 2 GB constraint from Dell due to the the hardware on the computer?

Here's a link for the memory I'd like to put in if possible http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820231146

Thanks in advance for the help

Hi AnthonyC, welcome to GeeksToGo!

The limitation would be on the motherboard your laptop has. Motherboards would specify the limit of RAM it can support and if you exceed it, most likely that you're computer won't boot up.
I doubled checked and your laptop can only support 2GB or RAM and nothing more.

Thanks Kamille,
That's exactly what I needed to know. I'm just trying to get this old laptop to run some modeling software so my company doesn't have to buy me a new one. Hopefully the 2 GB will be enough.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a Precision M70 which I'm trying to get another year out of, and I bought a 2G stick FROM DELL, but the machine will not boot - it starts then powers down in about a second. Does anyone have any idea how to find out if there is a firmware update or something I need to download in order to take advantage of this new memory?

The system will only support 2GB maximum and that is configured by 2 X 1GB sticks per DIMM slot http://www.crucial.c...0-upgrades.html ask Dell if they will exchange the 2GB stick for 2 X 1GB sticks.
