Hi Alan we will run the Hijackthis scan on completion of the reg search (I did not realise that you do not have it :) ) Did you run the batch file to delete the services ? See my 9:28 post as there are some files to delete with OTMoveit reference that additional AV you have and a registry search for remnants of that which may well be slowing your system down

Hijackthis instructions

Download & Run HijackThis.exe

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,
having problems running regsearch - this scan is stopping after approx a minute at one of the 'keys'. After a couple of hours there is still no progress. I have restarted my computer and have tried the scan again but same problem.
Any advice, I haven't gone as far as the hijack scanning?
regards
Alan

Forgot to add that I have had a variety of virus software/ ad-aware programmes over the past year or so. I note that there must be some active firewalls currently operating that I can't track down as this is inhibiting one of the sites I had used allowing me to download information.

OK firstly I will give you a lightweight but good Antivirus. However Norton must be totally uninstalled first. They have a special tool for this http://service1.syma...005033108162039 Download and run this tool after you have downloaded a new antivirus programme, but prior to installation

I will give you the destructions for the AV I use (free :) )

Please go HERE and download avast! 4 Home Edition to your desktop.

Run the Norton removal tool and reboot, do not reconnect to the internet

Locate the file that you just downloaded, double-click on the file to launch the installation of avast!

Click Next on the avast! Setup window and on the next window with the ReadMe File.
Now you will see the Legal Agreement, just click I agree, and then click Next to continue.

You will be prompted with Configuration window, make sure that you choose Typical configuration and then click Next. Click Next to the windows that will follow, when the installation will finish, you will be given an option to schedule a boot time scan, select No

Now you have to restart your machine, select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about avast! it will give you the general "Hello and Thank you for choosing our Product." Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

VERY IMPORTANT - after restarting, right click on the a in the taskbar and select Updating, then highlight and click Program.

You will get popup after its done updating. If avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

After you have updated avast! right click the small icon a in task bar and click Start Avast! AntiVirus

Click Program Registration and you will be taken to their website. Fill out the form and then check you e-mail. Once you get an e-mail from them (usually about 1 minute after submitting the form) copy and paste the serial they provided into the highlighted box. Then click ok.

After this, you will need to Schedule Boot-Time Scan with avast! Click on the little button placed up in the left corner, and select Schedule Boot-Time Scan. Read also this tutorial HERE it may make it easier to you to follow the steps.

Next, choose
  • Scan all local disks
  • scan archive files
  • click on Schedule
On the next dialog Operating system restart needed select Yes
Now avast! will restart your computer and start to scan before Windows fully loads.

IMPORTANT NOTE since your system has infections on it, avast! will give you dialog box with recommended actions, and options, please make sure if this happens, to click the Move to Chest button, and not to delete any reported files.

The boot log will be located here C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\AswBoot.txt please post this on completion

Hi, as mentioned in the last reply, the following message/warning now comes up when starting outlook;
The Add-in "Anti-Virus ViRobot (C:\Program files|PCSecurityShield\ShieldAntivirus\VrCli.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the add-in manufacturer for an update. If noupdate is available please uninstall the Add-in.
Although at one itme I did have PC Security Shield this was removed although I still get a message about not being able to find the ViRobot on start up. I am unable to find this Add-in to uninstall it.

The Avast scan looks OK two false positives and one in quarantine

If you have Outlook 2007 then I have found a possible way of removing that error message

I was testing Symantec Endpoint Protection for a short while. After uninstalling endpoint protection I began receiving an error every time that I opened outlook. The error said something to the effect of “Unable to load Add-on please uninstall”.

In Outlook 2003 you should be able to simply remove the add-on within the add-on manager. In Outlook 2007 though it requires a different method. I had to delete a file called Extend.dat (location: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook) which is the file that stores the cached add-ons. After running Outlook again this file was recreated but this time Outlook did not give me an add-on error. This seems to apply to other add-ons as well. While searching the web I saw people report that this also works for similar errors after uninstalling AVG antivirus.

To that end

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Extend.dat
    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

This file will be removed to a quarantine section, so if it goes pearshaped we can restore it

Let me know how that goes and what the current state of your system is

Hi information as requested posted below.
No redirects coming up although system seems slow on initial start up, alert re 'add-in' still comes up with outlook and now a run time error when connecting to this page - may be nothing?

Hi, have run all the scans and defrag program - thanks for your help.
Unfortunately I am still getting the Add-in notification indicated earlier and the error message on this site (only) as indicated previously - any suggestions?
