This here is my log. I cannot remove hacktool from my system even with the instructions provided by Norton, which says to boot in safe mode and then remove it. Hacktool, norton says is from an unsupported file and is in a running process. Im not sure if it is a really bad virus and if someone is really trying to get into my system but I do not want it anyway.

Hi BigRusha,

Welcome to Geeks To Go,

I'm sorry that we haven't got to you until now, but the forum can get hectic at times.

I am sage5 and I will be helping you with this problem.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us.
The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP.
Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Cheers,

sage5

HI,

I went to windows update, I am fairly certain that I have this service pack 1. I tried to d/l the service pack 1a that you suggested but the windows update would not allow me to update it because it said I had the newer version of it. So what next?

Get a copy of HijackThis
  • Please download the latest version of HijackThis
  • Choose to Save to disk.
  • In the Save window, browse to C:\Program Files, and click on the Create a new folder button.
  • Name the new folder HijackThis or HJT
  • Save the dowload to this folder.

Run HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a system scan only button.
  • Check the boxes for the all the entries listed below:
O16 - DPF: {1B00725B-C455-4DE6-BFB6-AD540AD427CD} - http://fpdownload2.m...ash/swflash.cab
O16 - DPF: {233C1507-6A77-46A4-9443-F871F945D258} (Shockwave ActiveX Control) - http://fpdownload.ma...director/sw.cab

  • Now close all windows other than HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
  • Close HijackThis.

Run OTMoveIt2:
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\DOCUME~1\Alex\LOCALS~1\Temp\RtkBtMnt.EXE
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the Paste list of Files/Folders to be moved window (under the Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Make sure that there is a tick next to Unregister Dll's and OCX's
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Open Notepad
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy).
  • Paste the text into the Notepad file, click in the window and press Ctrl + V.
  • Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.
  • Save the text file as C:\otmove.txt
(If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.)

Run Deckard's System Scanner:
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double click on the dss.exe file on your Desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Scans will run, and 2 text files will open in Notepad.
  • Close both of the text files.
These files are C:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txt & extra.txt.
I will need you to copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of
  • main.txt
  • extra.txt
  • C:\otmove.txt
in your next reply.

Those logs look really good.
Are you still getting the Hacktool warning from your Norton's.

Please see if you can get an online scan done, just to double check that all is well.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, follow the instrutions below under Upgrading Java, to download and install the latest vesion.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right cklick on the jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Hi, I just came back to my comp and Norton ran while my comp was idle or whatever and it detected Hacktool once again and was once again unable to remove it or do anything else with it. This is so wierd that what Norton recommends to do with Hacktool does nothing (starting in safe mode and following their directions) and what I did following your directions which I thought would have worked, did not remove hacktool from my system. I do not know what to do next... can you tell me somehow where this is in my system, because I cannot even tell through norton exactly in what unsupported file it exists or hijacks my system.

thanks
Alex :)

Did you follow the instructions from Post#7?
Were you able to get a log file back from the Kaspersky scan?

Also see if you can rescan with Norton and copy down, as accurately as you can, the message that you get from Norton.
