Please can you help me.

I am having difficulty updating my antivirus (Avast free home edition) and anti spyware (Spyware Doctor)

When I run scans they state that all is clear.

According to my firewall (Comodo) nothing is being blocked.

What else do I need to look at?

Ensure that Internet Explorer isn't running in Offline mode.
To check, in IE6 look on the File menu, in IE7 it's on the default Tools button or the separate file menu. Take the tick out of the "Work Offline" entry if its present. An off-line Internet Explorer usually means programs that use it for internet access won't go online either.
