My system reboots randomly when reading from the optical drive. This happens whether in Windows (XP Pro) or linux. I also sometimes get a kernel panic when booting linux saying something fails to sync, but it's gone before I can read it all. Also, to boot from my linux live disk, I must use pfix=noram and disable acpi

Any idea what could be causing these problems?

Sounds like you are having driver issues with your motherboard's chipset. That is however, only speculation.
