connection to laptop very hot

My laptop keeps switching to battery (which is rubbish) the mains connection is getting very hot, is my laptop on its way out? dell inspiron 1150

i think more likely your power cord is on the way out....that transformer that converts the AC mains power to DC computer power could be going bad....it could also be the power supply inside of the laptop going bad and thereby causing the power converter to go bad...but the first thing i'd try is getting a new power cord
