I have McAfee Antivirus that is updated daily. I also have run Spybot-Search and Destroy, and it found no major threats. I did have a pop-up along the taskbar in the bottom right corner every five minutes or so saying that many of my applications were infected with spyware and that I needed to install an anti-spyware by clicking the pop-up. When I did, it took me to a bogus website where they wanted me to buy a fake antivirus software. I have since gotten rid of the pop-ups by using SmitFraudFix, but I cannot change my desktop background. When I go to properties the desktop tab is missing. I just want to be able to remove this annoying warning message. Here is my Hijack This log.

Hey StAnLi86,

Welcome to GeekstoGo! I'm Ltangelic and I'll be helping you fix your computer problem.

Take note that I'm still in training, and my posts will have to be checked by an expert. This may cause delays in between my responses, I ask for your patience. Please stick with me until we get your computer cleaned up or it will be a wasted effort on both sides. :)

I'm looking at your log now, and I'll post back with a fix when I'm ready. Thanks for your patience.

PS. If I've not been responding, and you wonder why, feel free to PM me and I'll give an explanation.

Hey StAnLi86,

I see a few infected files in there. Let's use some tools to dig deeper into the machine. Meanwhile, please keep your infected computer disconnected from the Internet and transfer the setup files using a USB drive or any removable disk. Thanks. :)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Next reply (please include):

Hey StAnLi86,

You have signs of Sony DRM rootkit, it is optional if you want to remove it or not. If you do decide to remove it, please follow the instructions below:

Hey StAnLi86,

Infected files are still there, let's run some more tools. :)

Please follow my instructions in the order they were given, and print out a copy of it as you may not have access to the forums during the fix.

1) Run SmitfraudFix

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop. <---Important!!!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

2) Uninstall programs

Please go to Add or Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Viewpoint Media Player
<-- This is froistware installed without your permission, it is recommended for you to remove them

Reboot your computer.

3) Remove entries with HijackThis

Please re-open HijackThis and Do a System Scan Only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: {B5AB638F-D76C-415B-A8F2-F3CEAC502212} - - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - MRI_DISABLED - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ASpyC] "C:\Program Files\ASpyC\ASpyC.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: MRI_DISABLED

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

4) Run OTMoveIt2

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\Program Files\ASpyC
    C:\Program Files\RichVideoCodec
    C:\Program Files\Toolbar
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\995937
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cerim.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcrtlj0eed1.exe
    E:\setupSNK.exe
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\ASpyC
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\gw54RRjsj
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\TBPS
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WinTools
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{66320210-91d7-11da-b51a-000f20204735}
    purity
    emptytemp
    [start explorer]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Next reply (please include):

Hi Ltangelic,
Here are my logs. I have a desktop tab again! Is it okay for me to switch the desktop background from the solid blue? Also, am I able to clean up my desktop and delete some of these scans (Hijack This, Smitfraud Fix, OTMoveIt, etc)? Please let me know. I don't want to do it and mess something up. :) Ok, here are the logs in the order you requested them.

Hey StAnLi86,

What do you mean by delete the scans by OTMoveIt etc? Please don't remove any of the tools until the end of the cleaning process.

Your logs look much better. :) Let's run some final scans to make sure it's clean.

1) Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

2) Run Kaspersky online scan

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
3) Run DSS

Please double-click on dss.exe.
DSS will now run again.
Please post back both logs that open in notepad.

Hi Ltangelic,
I was unable to run the Kaspersky Scanner. Windows blocked it because it couldn't verify the publisher. I also was unable to locate the DSS file on my desktop, and I am uanble to re-download the tool. The link you previously gave does not work, but when I search for Deckard's System Scanner and go to the geeks to go website, it will not let me download the file. It says something is not compatible with my computer. :) Here is the MBAM log...

Hey StAnLi86,

Good news, your logs are clean now. :)

1) Cleanup with OTMoveIt2

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")

* Click on the CleanUp! button
* A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
* If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
* Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
* You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

2) Update Adobe Reader

Please uninstall the current version of Adobe you have and go here to install the latest version.

3) Reset System Restore

  • Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Properties".
  • Go to "System Restore" tab and check "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "Yes" at the prompt. (Wait a while for it to finish)
  • Then UNcheck "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click "Yes" at the prompt. (Wait a while for it to finish)
  • Your System Restore is now turned on.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please post back telling me if there are any problems with your computer, so I can ask a staff to close this.
