My good friend has a Dell with Vista. She didn't update her McAfee in about a month. She told me that when she started it up a week ago, she got a black screen that asked to start normal or repair. It only let her start with repair but when it tried to repair the issue it said in was an unfixable error(s). The computer wouldn't start for a day or so. Now it boots up, but is verrrryy slow. It is unable to connect to wireless internet or an ethernet connection. I managed to get a Hijack This log off it after 20 minutes of waiting. Thanks for any help!

Hi darktower :)

Sorry about your wait time :) things are a little busy around here. I'm in training right now so I am posting under supervision, there may be a lag between my replies as they have to be checked before I say them to you. I have gone through your log and will be posting help for you shortly :)

If you have already resolved this problem or are receiving help elsewhere please let us know so this topic can be closed ;)

Hi darktower :)

You should uninstall a couple programs. Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following:
- Viewpoint
- Pink Ribbon Toolbar

Since the computer has no internet access before helping you further I need to know if you are able to transfer files to it using a thumbdrive or a cd?

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and transfer it to the other computer's Desktop.
- Close all other windows before proceeding.
- Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
- If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
- When the scan has finished, two notepad files will open named main.txt and extra.txt. Please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt in one reply and extra.txt in a separate reply.

Hi Dark :) Please follow the directions below:

Step 1: Uninstall Programs
  • Click "Start"
  • Click "Control Panel"
  • Under "Programs" Click "Uninstall a program"
  • Select each of the following from the list then click the "uninstall" button
    Internet Service Offers Launcher
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
    LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)
    LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

There is a p2p sharing program on the computer Limewire. You should be uninstalling this. These programs are bad for your computer and very vulnerable to malware.

Step 2: Upgrade Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Step 3: Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Step 4: Post new DSS Logs
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.

Hi Dark, sorry it would have taken longer to fix. Thanks for letting me know what you were planning on doing.

Once you're all set up, you might want to follow some of the recommendations below to protect the system from re-infection.
  • Anti-Spyware/Anti-Malware
Some good free programs are: Superantispyware, Spybot, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

  • Reduce malware infection in the future
Try using these free programs: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX and IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

  • Prevent your computer from accessing known bad websites
MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This blocks your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    - Click "Start">"Run"
    - Type "Inetcpl.cpl" then click "OK"
    - Click on the "Security" tab
    - Click "Reset all zones to default level"
    - Make sure the "Internet Zone" is selected then Click "Custom level"
    - In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    - Next Click the "OK", then "Apply" button
    - Click "OK" to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Use a different internet browser
Mozilla Firefox is more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and has a built-in pop up blocker.

  • To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly.

  • To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?
Have a safe and happy computing day! :)
