I got these warnings yesterday. In my innocence I downloaded even more malware (SpyHunter3) in my pathetic attempts to fix it myself. I also downloaded smitfraud, which I now have some doubts about.

I have tried SuperAntiSpyware and also Windows Defender and Windows Defender sees it, but doesn't seem able to remove it.

On the positive side, I am not experiencing as many system problems as I have seen others describe. It's annoying and my system is running slowly, but I've backed up all my files, and I feel like I have very little left to lose to try and fix this before I wipe my hard drive and start over.

Here is my HJT log. I am eagerly awaiting some help. Your choice of home baked cookies or a nice donation if you can fix this -- I am so sick of it!!!

Hi there,

Welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is RatHat, and I will help you get through the process of cleaning the malware from your computer.

OK firstly, I need you to print out each post I make so that you can refer to it while we fix your computer. This is because there will be times when you are unable to be online to read my instructions, and I will want you to do everything very carefully. I also need you to follow my instructions in the order that they are given. If however, you cannot carry out one of them, please continue on with the next and let me know what you were unsuccessful with.

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

Next, I would like to make sure that you can view hidden files and folders;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please post me an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Re-Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Save it to your desktop and paste the results in your next post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.
Please read this Combofix tutorial before continuing, then follow the instructions below.
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
Next, download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.
Posted Image
Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.
Posted Image
Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply.
(Note: Combofix will also save the report to C:\Combofix.txt)
Do you still require assistance with this log?
You are so very kind to follow up. When I tried to turn on the computer, I got no Start button, no desktop icons. I think I'm ready to wipe it. The "My Computer" Icon (which I accessed through the Task Manager - my only option as far as I know) was corrupt looking.
If you think it's still salvageable (sp?) let me know - but I think I'm ready to wipe it!
Can you boot into Safe Mode?
Also can you download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and transfer it via a thumb drive to the infected machine, then run it in Safe Mode without updating? Be sure not to use the thumb drive again though until I can make sure it is clean for you.
Thanks. I will try it tonight. Just so i understand - you are saying to skip the ATF Cleaner step, and go straight to the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware step?
Yes you can skip the ATF step. ATF just cleans out the temp files, which would shorten the MBAM scan a little, but will not affect the end result.
Not well, I'm afraid :)
I needed that emoticon to make me feel better. Sigh.
Safe Mode gave me a dark screen with no buttons either. It gave Win XP build info on the top and said "Safe Mode" in the bottom corners, but that's it.
I took the thumb drive and used Windows Task Manager to run the MBAM program from the thumb drive. It seemed to run OK, found some infected files, but on reboot, no change in machine behavior. I haven't posted any logs because I'm afraid to put that thumb drive anywhere else - it's been in "dirty places" ha ha.
Thoughts? I have now brought the computer here to my office so if you have other suggestions I can be a bit more responsive today.
Thanks for staying on this with me.
Bit of a bugger this one isn't it!
OK, lets make sure that you flash drive is clean before using it again:
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to the desktop of the clean computer.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility will ask you to insert your flash drive. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up the drivel.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.
Now lets run Combofix on the infected machine. If you can boot into normal mode and run it from there it would be best, however if you can only get into safe mode, then run it as you did with MBAM.
Download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your thumb drive, then transfer it to the infected machine.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Now try rebooting into normal mode (if you have not already) and let me know how things went.
Regards,
RatHat
No change at all. Blue screen on startup. It seemed to run OK (ComboFix) and had like 48 "stages" or so - took a while. sigh. Time to give up yet?
I really hate to give up, so that choice will have to be yours. If at all possible, I want to find a way to get your machine back to normal, and make sure you have access to all your files.
Can you post me the log that Combofix will have created. It will be in the root drive, usually C:\Combofix.txt
OK. Under C:\ComboFix we have "ComboFix.txt" and all it says is:
ComboFix 08-08-21.02 - MyName 2008-08-23 10:41:01.1 - NTFSx86
Running from E:\ComboFix.exe
* Created a new restore point
WARNING - THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
Don't ask me...I only follow instructions. It ran -- I saw it go through a whole bunch of steps, as high as around 48.
Can you try running both MBAM and Combofix again, then let me know exactly what the status is with your machine. Can you boot into normal mode? Can you see your desktop? Anything like that.
I ran MBAM again - full scan, took almost 2 hours. It found nothing. Then I ran ComboFix again. It rebooted when it finished running. I still have a plain blue screen with no buttons on my desktop.
