Its a dell dimention 8110 with xp. Its one cd rom drive and one floppy. Just stopping visualizing the disc without any changes or prompting. The disc spins, the light blinks and when you open the door and close you get the disc on your mouse showing that its working but when you click on the disc drive in my computer it comes up blank. When you try to play with windows messenger, it says please insert a disc when the disc is in there. Help. Ive tried to update the driver. The computer has sp 1,2 and 3.

Maybe the disc is incompatible? It might be a disc with proprietary information created by another drive. Is the disc damaged or dirty? Have you tried multiple discs?

Other problem may be the drive is bad. The laser eye may be bad, which means the disc would still spin, the drive would still appear to work, but it can't read because the eye doesn't work.

You may need to get a new disc drive. They are easy to install, and can be had for between $20 and $40.

Here are a couple:

EDIT: And no, you CAN'T use it for a retractible coffe mug holder... :)

P.S. unplug and remove the oneyou have now and just get one which matches the plugs, probably an IDE. that way you dont have to go messing with the plugs on the board, yu can just plug the wires into the back of the new one and you are ready to go.

well best option if you dont know what to order would be to take the one out of your case that you have now and take it down to best buy or Comp USA, ask them to match it up to a new one, take it out of package at store and make sure the plugs match on the back.

If you have a camera that you can take pictures of the back of it, where the plugs are, we can probably tell you which one you can order off the internet if you want.

P.S. That's take pictures of the back of the CD Drive once you remove it, not the computer...
