Good morning/afternoon/evening, whichever applies to your timezone~

After an entire day of snarling at google for giving me insufficient results, I've finally found you all, and have come to beg assistance! I've read/done all the preparation before posting a hijack log, and I believe (but am not certain) I've gotten rid of autorun.inf and its attached virus. I can still definitely see kxvo.exe and ckvo.exe sitting in my system32 folder, now that I can finally see hidden files again. It never showed up on AVG in the first place (I had to have an account compromised before I went scouring every inch of my computer for something amiss), and now scans there only turn up a few registry changes.

Ah. And now I went to find something on my flash drive, lo and behold, AVG notices Trojan horse PSW.OnlineGames.AQ and PSW.OnlineGames.AO, supposedly healed successfully.

I could use a recommendation for keeping the autorun.inf from reoccuring though, as I'm a college student, and animation majors can't escape using school computers (which are, naturally, all infected with it). I picked up Net Studio's USB Firewall, and it seems to be doing a good job so far. If you have a better recommendation, though, I'm all ears (figuratively).

Without further ado....The HijackThis log/uninstall list, followed by Malwarebytes' (though, it has nothing to report now):

I believe I posted all of that right....

EDIT: In addition, I took the initiative to see what Kaspersky would say, and it's telling me 'Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program.' This is irritating, because I've got v6 update 7. I also tried fiddling with the security level in IE7 to no avail.

Hi there and sorry for the delay I would like a fresh look at your system, but first to protect you from autoruns

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

HAVING DONE THAT

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Attached File  OTScanIt.Txt   210.18KB   268 downloads

Here we go.

Despite being able to see hidden files and folders once more, I'm not seeing Flash Disinfector's autorun folder. Should I be...concerned?

I can see the disinfector on I drive, but no sign of the files you reference. Also AVG is at version 8

You have some old Java on your system

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

THEN

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Win32 Services - Non-Microsoft Only]
YY -> (718B4105) 718B4105 [Win32_Own | Disabled | Stopped] -> %SystemRoot%\system32\595C25B8.EXE
[Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.
I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

What problems are you experiencing

Whoops, thought I had posted this yesterday. Ah well, I'm here now.

Java's updated, I've just gotten and finished updating AVG8. As far as problems go, I seem to be clear. Though, I'm still changing whatever passwords I use on this computer every night using my older computer, which remains seemingly uninfected.

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so...Download and run this small programme and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

VISTA
To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System and Maintenance
  • Select System
  • On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
  • Go back to the System and Maintenance page
  • Select Performance Information and Tools
  • On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
  • Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
  • In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete
You are now done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
